This was posted recently:

"EA servers are coming online now, please don't swamp the connections
smile.gif

You will notice a lack of game servers too, we are bringing these up gradually to avoid overloading.

The client wasn't tested in time today so we will look to release that tomorrow.

Sorry for the outage today, we'll try to make sure it doesnt happen again"

So no Beta update today then? It's coming tomorrow??? I really hope the build is much closer to the retail version so we can see some of the updates that are supposed to be in the retail version.

Yeah I hope they try out the release build before release so there aren't any nasty surprises and 0 day patches.

Here's the link to the info posted above. http://forums.electronicarts.co.uk/...a/893363-updated-maintenance-client-info.html

Bazajaytee posted/is posting updates in the thread. Supposedly we will see a post-mortem on today's outage, posted tonight by Mikeal Kalms. Plenty of "douchebaggery" in evidence in the thread from people disappointed in not seeing the beta update today.

Already been posted, doesn't really say much other than too many connections caused it to keep crashing when they restarted.

Here is the promised story of what happened today. Anti-climactic. Source.

Default EA server maintenance Tuesday is finally over
Let me tell you a story.

Once upon a time, EAIT took down the server backend for maintenance, for just a few hours. It was with great reluctance that the network administrators took the systems offline, for they knew what would happen:

No connectivity. Stumbling in the dark, players and game servers alike. Without the guiding light of the Server Lobby, they were scattered around the globe, with no hope of finding each other again.

Maintenance went on. Players eagerly testing whether or not it was possible to log in again. All of them met with a most depressing “Cannot connect to EA Online”.
Servers even more so. But automated as they are, they kept on trying. Relentlessly. Every 5 seconds, another attempt, another failed connection.

But ho! At long last, maintenance was done. Backend was up! All servers rejoice!
In less than 5 seconds, 4000 servers logged in. And killed the backend.
Over and over again.

What to do, what to do?

Bring down all the servers! And roll out R7; don’t login so often - that sends our backend to heaven.

Then bring them up slowly, a few at a time.

And when they are all up, let the players in again. Enable the Server Lobby! Let the battles commence!

So.. that’s what happened today. In horrible prose. Sorry about the prose.

Someone told me today that xbox live players will be playing in the same servers as the PC players in BC2. Is this true?

When people say things like this I usually tell them they are wrong but this was coming from someone who plays a lot of games so it made me wonder.

Definitely not true, the PC and 360 version don't even support the same number of players.

$5 says performance is still the same regardless of all future updates.

Theres no coding miracle they can pull off to make it work the way people want it to.

Maybe they will make more graphics options so you can make a more custom visuals vs FPS trade off like in GTA4.

The game itself isn't bad. It feels like a hybrid between the console BF games and the true PC ones. The only thing I hate is the amount of bullets it takes to kill someone. I swear its easier to kill someone in Halo 3 with an overshield in many cases.

If you're moving the mouse that much then you're doin something wrong man. I only make small little mouse adjustments when flying around, it feels the same in this game as it did in all the other BF games sans DC (where helo flying was pretty challenging).

that is what I thought too...it shouldn't be that hard.

maybe I am reading the controls wrong (didn't spend a ton of time reviewing every little setting)

I went through and used the default 'controls'

mouse forward = nose down
mouse back = nose up

left = left
right = right

don't know where I had the invert mouse stuff...

what was your tweet that you made in order to have tight controls (that is what i am basically looking for)

Maybe you (or your buddy) is misunderstanding what was being said. We know all versions of the game run on dedicated servers. These servers are all basically slimmed down PC's, right? I don't think they are running the dedicated servers for Xbox Live on a bunch of Xbox's hosted in a data center.

I recall one of the DICE Devs saying they were running 12 virtual servers on each physical machine. I think they are just saying that they can run PC servers, and Xbox servers, and PS3 servers on the same dedicated server, at the same time. But, the individual players are not mixing together. The different types of virtual servers are isolated from each other.

Anyone still looking for a PC Beta key?

http://www.fileplay.net/keys

Click to 'Join Fileplay' on the top right corner and create a 'Member' account for free and you will receive an e-mail to activate your membership then login into the website and go to the bad company beta key page to request a 'public' beta key. All of this should not take more than 2 minutes.

Let me know if you try and it DOESN'T work. Thanks.

I saw references to this before but didn't really understand how it worked. The descriptions below made it more clear.

Battlefield Bad Company 2 features Mass Effect 2 style DLC access

When you buy "Battlefield: Bad Company 2" early next month, each new copy will include a "VIP" code which will allow you to access the game's downloadable content. I spoke with Patrick Bach, the senior producer on "Bad Company 2," to find out just what sort of DLC plans the developers had in mind. Here's what he had to say:

"We want people to insert the code they get when they buy the game to get access to [DLC content]. It's connected to your personal account, more or less, and what we want to do is give you something extra, added value, for that. In the future you will get more content, for free, if you have this VIP code."

EA’s "Project Ten Dollar", the company’s attempts at giving the used game business a dead arm, will be a part of Battlefiedl Bad Company 2’s launch, just as it was with Mass Effect 2’s . BBC2 will feature an in-game store, access to which will be given out for free to people who purchase new copies of the game. Buy a game without this access and you’ll have to pay to get into the store, which will be dishing stuff out for free to those plugged in. So, yes, it’s exactly the same as Mass Effect 2’s Cerberus Network. No word on pricing yet, but if it’s the same as Cerberus, you’d expect it to cost $15, which then begs the question, "why not call it ‘Project Fifteen Dollar’?"

This includes free DLC that will be available on launch day, which will be a set of new multiplayer maps.

Is the free DLC on release going to be the Karkand map? Source. Another view.

New info about the impending PC beta patch release:

It is with QA at the minute, the version we were going to release got changed to a new version after a crash bug was found and fixed.
Source

Hopefully we will have it out sometime late this afternoon/early evening. Of course it depends what QA finds in this version of the client.
I'll let you know more accurately once we have a go ahead from QA.

We just got the results back from QA for the new patch version and unfortunately it isn't good news. Multiple CTD's and performance issues. This of course means we won't be releasing a patch today.

Sorry guys, maybe tomorrow

Glad to hear it, man. I would just refer you to the list of official download locations from the blog. There's no big load at the moment so you should not have any trouble getting it quick.

Play a "hardcore" version server and then let me know if you feel the same way...

Anybody know if bumping your Veteran score past "1" actually does anything? Other than the little number-in-the-white-square that goes next to your name on the in-game scoreboard, that is? Odd that the first game you add gives you Vet-0, and only the second one gives you the Vet-1 you need for the early teamwork items. If anyone needs another easy one and you haven't played BF Heroes, all you have to do is log into the Heroes site with your EA Account, create a soldier, and it'll register on the Veteran site & bump your Vet score - you don't even have to have installed the game or played a round.
