The genius in it is knowing how stupid his base is. With a moderately informed electorate their tricks wouldn't work.
Informed with what? What the the current hot story of the day is? What the media outlets are reporting?

How does a base get informed?

Is information the only thing to be considered? What about clear thinking and independent thought?

The latter is totally lacking in this culture. We're obsessed with the latest tweet or the latest BS story. Then we forget it and move on to the next one. We're craving for something and I don't think it is truth.

So the real question is, why do we allow the media to ignore the important news and report the dumb stuff instead? If this isn't what we wanted/consumed then we wouldn't be getting it.

That's exactly it. #1, things are the way they are because it works...the media is how they are because nobody cares to do anything else & people like (or at least use) what they are putting out. #2, over half the country voted Trump in. We got what the majority wanted.

Trump is a very entertaining guy & we love entertainment in our country. I think people were also sick of same-old, same-old politics. There's a lot of reasons, but that's an entirely different tangent, haha.
