The Art of Napping at Work

Anyone do this regularly?

Took lunch today with my eyes shut under my desk. Office door closed and lights off - no distractions. It was great, but impromptu. I'm going to need to bring a pillow and possibly a camping pad or something to make the floor a bit more comfortable. It is definitely happening again.

What's your strategy?

not regularly but I do doze off at the desk on occasion when I don't get enough sleep. easy to do when you work 3rd shift.

sometimes we will hear someone, quite loudly, sawing logs.

it not a good thing to do to sleep when your suppose to be working, good way to get fired, so be careful and only sleep on breaks.

Sleep at any time gets you fired eh?

I put my head down and tap my fingers so people know I'm not asleep if I need to close my eyes.

I often nod off in the winter when business is really slow, I worry though, because I snore.

Also sometimes if Im really out, when the phone rings I scream and pee myself.

Being able to nap at work sounds nice. I've heard of companies providing bunks for people who wanted to nap while on break. That's not something I can do though. I'd be too worried about how short my break is, what I needed to do after my break, how much noise and activity there was around me, etc.

haha sounds like this board is a bit uptight. I'm talking about sleeping during lunch time - not during work time. In my office, lunch is my time, so I can do what I want. Just set an alarm & good to go.

Hmm In the USA I think that can still get you fired. Which is why we are uptight 🙂

I'd love to take a nap on lunchtime.

Really? Fired for napping at lunch... that thought has honestly never occurred to me. Why would you get fired for this, provided of course that it did not negatively affect your work performance?

I work a strait 8 hours with lunch at the desk and no lunch break, so that is not an option for me and 15 minutes just doesn't cut it for a nap.

do you get an hour or 1/2 hour for lunch?

What do you do when Steinbrenner comes in to ask you about the lyrics to 'Heartbreaker' by Pat Benatar?

Done it twice accidentally at the end of the day... Left work half an hour late. I was seriously just trying to rest my head.

My preferred location is the server room. Limited access and the comforting sounds of electronics humming. Although it is cold I have a chair set up behind a row of racks and cooling airflow is lacking since it is near a corner wall so the warm server exhaust keeps me at the proper temperature.

This is not a regular thing... but some nights I get into a gaming session which can go late and this lunch nap allows me to re-energize.

Before I moved closer to work(25 miles prior and now 4 miles away) I would nap every single day on my lunch in the car. At car washes, in parking lots, pulled over on the side of the road. Not fucked up about a nap. I took a nap today on my break, although it was in my bed.

I have fallen asleep at past jobs, oops. Just today I was on hold on the phone for what seemed forever. I scooted my chair back and put my forehead on the desk just waiting for them to pick up, next thing I know I heard the CEO say(while introducing a new employee nonetheless) and this is Derrick, looks like he's either on the phone or praying. That was awkward.

I have taken toilet naps too.

15-20 minutes on the toilet but SHIT when I get up I'm met with a painful sensation because my legs went to sleep on me.

I've taken a toilet nap once when I had slept for like 2.5 - 3 hours the previous night. I probably only actually slept for 5 minutes but it was surprisingly refreshing.

It's too bad so few employees allow for naps. If I was allowed to sleep for 30-45 minutes at noon, I could actually get some work done in the afternoon instead of staring blankly at the screen for the last 3 hours of the workday.

I used to do that, when I worked two jobs.

The Boss took me to lunch last week. On the way back to the office, I said I needed some caffeine to keep me awake after that big meal. He said, "Take a nap if you need one, I don't care."

He's awesome.

Once in a while, I go into the other office, which doesn't have any exterior windows. It's dim, but I can still hear if someone knocks on the outside door, which is locked.
