The Arctic Accelero R9 290X-Xtreme III

Hello guys,

First of all, sorry for my bad english.

I bought a R9 290 and also bought a Arctic Accelero Xtreme III kit in order to not worry about the temperature and reduce the noise.
Is that what I'm reading, the VRM heatsink is not keeping up the board.
I wonder if he will give problem to use this video card, considering that I will not overclock it.

If I have to buy separate VRM, what you guys recommend?

Welcome to the forums. If you don't plan on overclocking the card then the included heatsinks for the vrm will work fine. Make sure to use the 12v fan connector OR use the fan header on the PCB to connect the Accelero fans and manually raise the fan speed to 100% in AMD overdrive when gaming.

Ok! Thanks for the answer, i will use the 12v fan and use msi afterburner 🙂

No problem, but you will not need to use both. If you use the 12v fan adapter the fan will be @ 100% all of the time. If you just connect the fan to the fan header on the video card, the fan will spin at 25-30% at idle, but for gaming you will want to change the fan to 100% using afterburner.

So I talked to a friend who also installed an Accelero (on his R9 290, not 290X). He bought his with the intention of overclocking, and ran into the same VRM temp issues. He says running at stock speeds it is okay, but once he boosts up the voltage a bit temps go crazy. He just bought some side door case fans to try to get more airflow across those VRM sinks to see if that help.

Now I'm thinking about a custom water loop with a 290(X) water block. Always wanted to do a custom loop but never had the reason to until now. I think having the VRM cooled by the same piece of copper as the GPU and the VRAM will help immensely. Difficult to find a 290(X) water block at the moment though, so I got time to think about it.

I was looking into buying the Corsair Carbide 300R, but I'm not sure if this will fit 2x the 290 with Accelero coolers.

They will fit in a 300R. However, if you plan on overclocking and overvolting much, I wouldn't do this.... the top card get's 10-15c hotter pretty quick. If you leave them at stock speeds or overclock without voltage they should be fine.


In a 500R with the HDD cages removed. Even with the cages still installed, you would have enough room. Poor soundcard doesn't stand a chance 😀

ps. I tried removing my R290 heatsink from the plate, its soldered on... such a dumb move from AMD.

You didn't try hard enough

You can see the whole process here

The plate alone is fine for mild overclocks under normal use(<+50mV), but if you plan to either add a lot of voltage and/or are 'coin mining you will need direct airflow over the Core VRMs. You can see in the last picture I accomplished this with a 92x25mm fan and this keeps it quite cool.

While the Memory VRM will remain cool regardless, I would suggest adding a few sinks for the memory modules as they get quite warm.

I have installed my accelero xtreme III, and i think i will need a backplate or vga holder, i think it's to much weight for the vga and mobo:

what u guys think?

Please recommend me a backplate ou vga holder if i need it.

Just about any Alternate Air Cooler, WB or AIB Air Cooling solution is heavy and hangs (Refereed to as sagging) in the slot. You can string it to something over head to the case using a thin tie down or buy a Card holder.
