The Answer Is Always Miata

So... Sept 3rd is a few weeks away and the ND Miata will soon be upon us.

There have been some spyshots out in public over found on miata.net and it doesn't reveal much but the front end looks more sharp... the exhaust is integrated into the bumper which is interesting

I really hope there is some camo trickery going on. That thing is fugly and fat for a Miata.

In other news, I'm selling my NB Miata soon.

Almost looks like a baby Z4 now... the miata fanatics aren't a fan of the wheel arches...

also I keep seeing 4 lug wheels because they are wanting to save as much weight as possible to but keep the car affordable too.

Miatas are always too high and too lightly sprung off the showroom floor. They are targeted at a broader audience (eg old people with money who want a weekend cruiser).

Mazdaspeed (Eibach) springs and sways drop the car 1.5 inches and make it handle like it was designed to. Put in some decent coilovers and better rubber and it is ready for the track.

Twelve minute video where X-car attempts to figure out what makes the Miata so great.

Mine was a 93 black and tan. Took it the length of the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline drive... Used to feed french fries to the sea gulls while driving on the beach at Daytona with the top down... Fond memories of pacing Pelicans on A1A going north to St Augustine.

Mazda's sold over a million of them... Will be interesting to see what they've done with the new model...

NC miata with I/H/E are as quick as stock AP1 S2000's 🙂 and sometimes quicker on the track

Something tells me a Miata isn't getting a 50 horsepower gain from I/H/E, which is what it would take for the NC to match the AP1's power to weight ratio.

So, let's give that a polite "um, no."

I love Miatas, but I've lapped my street S2000 faster than the stripped, full-aero, high-$ suspension FatCat Motorsports Miata. I had no aero, one blown shock, and the rest of my shocks were recently dyno'd by a pro builder who described them as "terrible." I'm also not a very good driver. The Miata isn't even in the ballpark, speed-wise.

It is, however, still a wonderful car and I really want a green NB with a tan top. 🙂

You're right, and it pisses me off. As soon as you change your springs, you have to compete against everyone who has their car completely decked out. Competing with them gets expensive to the point where you should have just bought a Porsche.

I wish cars would just be good when stock.

I'll give you a polite "um, no" and maybe a polite "um, it really depends on the driver and the track"

No arguments that the S2K has a lot more power than a Miata, allowing it to excel on tracks with a lot of braking/accelerating. But there's no way you'd be beating cars like the above-described Miata on a 'momentum' track.

NC Miatas with I/H/E usually put down 170ish HP and 145-150tqe considering the brakes are from the RX-8 which are better than the S2000 stock brake setup and the miata weighing 2400lbs, and the s2000 weighing 2800-2900lbs depending on year... it's alot closer than you might think if driven properly

I was always under the notion that AP1's put down about 200-205hp and the AP2's put down 210ish

the way the gearing is, the Miata should be able to pull out of a tight corner better than the AP1, the miata is easier to drive at the limit than both AP1/AP2, and the miata is lighter

Now hardcore people that track will obviously mod more than just standard bolt ons, but if you had to just replace pads/fluids on the s2000 and miata with I/H/E (and no bolt ons with the s2000 because expensive and no significant gains), from what i've seen the NC miata is as quick as s2000's on tracks
