I agree that we should ditch the bots as well. :p

Also, faster map rotation would be nice. :D

Well, I don't have a problem with assault. Bots are a different story. Definitely need to ditch the bots.

i find assault heavily unbalanced... out of 10 or so games played, the missile's been successfully defended once.

Yah, once you find out that you can destroy the turrets the challenge lessons quite a bit (just take the first minute or so to destroy those last turrets, and then you can pretty much make it in every time).

i'm positive...bots have ping 0...and i knw the names of bots from the previous UT's i've played (owner of original UT, and UT2k3)

yeah, a map cycle would be cool...but have onslaught map be on every other map :) :)

While the idea is a good one, I do not think that it is going to work. Having people pay to play a game when they can just join a different server for free doesn't work that often. I've tried it. :D Most of the times, it's the clans that pay for the servers and they are dedicated to keeping them going.

I host a CS server for free using the extra cpu cycles and bandwidth on my server. It would be nice if the regulars donated, but I don't see that happening. For right now it's just extra bandwidth I'm using anyways, so I'm not losing anything. Just like you (although, you say it costs you $40 to do this... I'm not sure why if it's your server).

Also, those pings in the web admin are definitely wrong. In-game I ping myself as 130 or so, but on the web admin it's showing me as having a 30 ping, which I've never had in my life.

I've setup a test server, just to see how it effects the server and if it can handle two games on it. It's defaulted to stay on Onslaught:
69.41.245.114 (hosted on the same network as OP, so pings should be the same... good or bad.)

Well, I will give it a try. The reason I said it costs me money is that I use this server for a webhosting bisiness. If I run a gameserver on it I cannot fill the server up with websites but instead I have to balance the load between the websites that I host or the game server. I am not worried about the bandwidth usage, I just have some sites with 400mb MySQL databases that are always being accessed and that brings the load up signnificantly if I need to run a game server at the same time. What people would be paying for would be to play with there fellow ATers. For example we could set up games every day at 8PM so that we get people in at a time, and not have a few people on at random periods in the day. Then we could also switch games, for example today it could be UT2K4, tommorow the origional UT or UT2k3, and then the day after CS.
I am not trying to make any money off of this, all I want to do is break even.

For the people talking about the game. Bots have been taken off and the game is now on onslaught. The game does not have the option to switch game modes, and since this is the demo there is only one map per game type. If you guys wish I could set up a UT2003 server.

I would like to say thank you for hosting a game server. I don't get much time to play games anymore and having a single location or two where I can grab a quick twenty to thirty minute game is a blessing.

Thanks again and let me know if I can help,
Quixfire

If anyone wants to play, PM me or AIM me (EntityAT). I'll play if a few others want to.

I think that is an excellent incentive and a great bargain.

Although I would charge $2/mo and increase it to 50MB/500MB.

Create a special subdomain on your web site listing all the perks (resources, email, FTP, PHP, MySQL, cPanel demo, webmail, etc.) and a link to your Paypal address. Hopefully you have a personal (non-cc) Paypal account because those Paypal fees can really suck on such a small amount.

Actually I don't. Guess I will go and make one right now as I believe paypal allows you to have a business and a pesonal account.

Good idea and Paypal does allow you to have both a personal and premier/business account.

I was on a server last night that rotated BR/ONS/AS so it can be done. Also, if Assault is too easy, just remember that you can probably configure various time options to make it harder. Also, it's too soon to judge because we've only seen one map.

As for the AnandTech server, I'll give it a try and see how busy it is and what kind of ping I get. If it's good then I'll gladly chip in a few bucks a month.

I think that people will start playing later in the evening today. I was actually thinking about running the origional ut tonight. As for the rotation cpals showed me a link and I will set that up. I'm thinking Assualt, Team DeathMatch, Onsluaght, and Capture the Flag.

What kind of guarantee are you offering? Are you only allowing 16 total signups?

These are not signups as people would be able to play without donating. I wnated to do it on a signup system but then realized there are some people that do not have paypal or do not have the money at the moment yet they wish to play. If you donate and at one point you try to connect to the server, and it happens to be full then I will gladely refund your money. Yesterday, the server never reached 16 players (I saw 14 or 15.)
