I've been reading Road & Track since the early 80s. I like Peter Egan's writing style and he always makes me laugh. He's one of the reasons I keep my subscription to R&T.

 I agree with every word he wrote in that article.

Am I making a sweeping generalization here?

Yes

I have mirrors, and I check them

but most ppl don't, so it isn't too far off

I'm American and have travelled many places and I agree that American drivers for the most part are horrible and do not look at their mirrors except for to make sure they have nothing stuck in their teeth when they have their car parked. They have a tendency to merge when they want expecting ppl to move out of their way. They don't know how to use their side and rear view mirrors and don't know how to check their blind spots. Ppl on cell phones like to drive 65mph and slower on the passing lane forcing other (faster) drivers to ....argh..u get the point. I'm making these calls based on what I see and my friends and family. My GF is probably the most horrendous driver I know. She is the reason I don't make use of my M class license as much as I'd like to. With ppl like her on the road its a matter of time before I get in a bad accident.

I'm not even sure how much I love America anymore when I see what the politicians do with it and what the average IQ and behavior of an American is. The only things left to love are the sights and a few groups of people.

Agreed. People in general just suck at driving. But it's not so much the complete lack of any semblance of skill that's annoying; I could live with people who just aren't good at operating an automobile. What's aggravating is the obliviousness and utter lack of respect for other drivers on the road. Inconsiderateness is a HUGE pet peeve of mine in any aspect of life, but while on the road especially.
