Recent AI-assisted coding & automation projects:
Primary tools:
1. ChatGPT 5.2:
a. Python
b. Websites
c. Electron apps
d. Docker
e. Custom-scripted Linux installs
f. Linux From Scratch custom builds
2. Gemini 3:
a. One-shot insanity
b. Ability to do feedback loops back into the system
Fun projects:
1. Raspberry Pi uptime monitor:
a. 8GB Pi 5 board can easily handle 1,000 ping, HTTP, DNS, and scripts
b. Touchscreen case (for status monitoring & control) with 128GB NVMe was $90
c. Records Internet, server, computer, and IoT device uptime
2. Custom routers:
a. Server 2025 Hyper-V server running an OPNsense VM
b. Commodity hardware (ex. $1.2k Dell tower with 16 cores & 64GB RAM with Quad 10GbE cards for $150)
c. Custom VLAN's with isolation, VPN routing, etc.
d. Mesh networking with a management VM (Omada, Ubiquiti, etc.)
e. Tailscale integration (vPro KVM remote access, exit node VM,. etc.)
f. Multi-WAN (failover, dedicated routing, etc.
g. Endless free plugins (Zenarmor, Suricata, Unbound, CrowdSec, Squid, HAProxy, NetFlow, etc.)
The are pretty neat for both home & business. I'm playing with a mini PC-based version at home that uses inexpensive mesh WAP's that has 80% of the same features as a NGFW.
Bonkers capabilities!
3. Custom Roku apps:
a. Similar to smartphone apps, but much lighter weight
b. Easy to sideload
c. Been working on the world's cheapest video wall
Essentially:
a. A cheap mini PC (a Pi can do a few cameras & an N100 can do more!)
b. A bunch of uber-cheap Wyze cameras
c. go2rtc to decrypt the video streams & transcode to Roku-friendly format
It's pretty cool because you can program the app, design the GUI, and even draw a 3D mockup, all with AI!
4. Standalone Electron apps:
a. Cross-platform
b. Chromium-based
c. I was missing OG Picasa (Lightroom is too much work for just browsing lol) so I had Gemini 3 one-shot a replacement haha
5. AI NVR:
a. Started getting into Frigate lately (DIY AI video surveillance)
b. You can sub-stream existing systems like REOlink
c, Integrates well with Home Assistant for custom event AI triggers
6. Secure software alternatives:
a. I don't even use Grafana anymore because I can just have ChatGPT do everything. 50" 4K onn.-brand televsions are $178 at Walmart. Basic custom dashboards can run on a Pi or MELE N100 fanless mini PC.
b. Same with custom & personal Telegram-style bots...just setup Tailscale to home & run custom pinned web apps. SQlite & Apache in a Docker container on a Pi & voila!
c. There's so much crazy integration these days...REST API, JSON, MQTT, etc. You can pretty much make whatever you can dream up and style it to look & behave however you want!!
7. Website programming:
a. Fantastic GUI design (colors, graphics, animation, etc.)
b. Endless custom integrations
c. Neat back-end designs, such as having website content creators simply publish from Google Docs
