The age old question of "Why"?

I have been using computers since i was 8. I was aware of computers since the first 386 and on. Those were the days, i enjoy every minute of it. From silly games on floppies like Monster Bash (i think thats the name) or Jill of the Jungle till now where graphics cards can almost render an image that could fool many untrained eyes. My question for this entire forum though is this. Why? We have the greatest technology yet, and its increasing on a monthly basis... but not a single game worth while is out, or coming out using these technologies. Sure, there are AquaNox and Dronez but from the demos i've played and the videos i've seen... these games consist of nothing more shoot shoot shoot and look at the pretty graphics. Ok, fine for those of you who enjoy just that. If you can get by on that then i'm happy for you. But i have had my fill of shoot'em ups. I crave games with a story, a history, a character you can get to admire and even long to be. The last game even to do this for me was Max Payne, i admit, that was a shoot'em up. But wow, the way the story was told... the completely new effect of bullet time. I was blown away, before that was thief, completely changing the way i've ever seen a game played. To really rely on your senses beyond vision. Ok, this is a bit long probably for a forum, my apologizes. I ask all of you now, what games have you seen out that will truly push our new hardware, who will once again pull out the stops and make our jaws go slack. I want the power of my newest computer creation to meet its maker with a game worthy of its might. Until that day, i have no reason to upgrade from everything i have (866Mhz Pentium/ 256 Ram). It does all i need and much more because all games currently being produced are targeting computers that were made to word process and run napster at the same time - sad.
Oh... as a side note, its been a while since this has happened, but EA, you are the worst company yet for destorying UO2 to make a revision to a game that was already far too old. I understand many people still love the game, they could still play it, but choppy top down view does not get me "into" the world. Money grubbing little....... nevermind, its too late, you've already soiled your good name, good luck with a come back.
I await your response fellow board members. I'm eager to hear good news if there is any.
And i apologies for any grammar errors... I'm cursed that way.

Hmm, agree but it takes 2 years or so to build a game. So IMO games are based on technology that was only available 2 years ago. Then you have the companies that use other game engines, i.e. quake engines which makes it easier to put games out with some mods to them.

I would also like to know when games will be solely on DVD, and do away with 4 CD-ROM's for games, like Balur's Gate 2.

All my thoughts.

You're right about Electronic Arts being completely corporate now and totally into profit. I get a kick out of reading interviews from EA's "execs". They never admit they did anything wrong and just blame all their problems and flunky products on "lack of consumer demand". Arrogant weasels.

PC gaming is getting more commercial all the time. New game designs are usually "safe bets" being clones of past hits. Official game sites are dwindling and lacking in content. Even the boxes you buy off shelves are getting smaller and often ship with no manuals. This change alone ensures games will be simplistic because there's no room to include a manual in the packaging! It's messed up.

But good games are still there if you look for them. As for the ones needing performance...well just tell NV and ATi to stop pushing so hard.

About the DVD question, I recall hearing that games haven't been released on DVD because of the lack of copy protection, it's not as advanced as standard CD copy protection. And until a strong copy protection solution is created, we won't see games on DVD.

Although... this is only what I read before.. a while back.

Do yourself a favor & go buy Medal of honor - allied assault, that's a great game.

And when you're finished with that try out Jedi Knight II,an other great game,Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Aliens Vs Predator 2 ........ there are lots of good games out right now.

um all those games are the same. except for mohaa which plays a little differently.

i think thats the point the earlier posters were making, games these days are mainly clones of previous hits

Thanks for the Welcome ScrapSilicon. I'm still getting use to this thread stuff... not exactly sure what this buttons do 🙂 (aaahh, to be a newbie again)
Anyway, Budman yeah, i played MOHAA and RTCW i loved RTCW... MOHAA was kinda.... well, it was nice, but not my thing, a little too uninvolved i guess. I haven't really tried any top down games in a while, they rarely work for me (starcraft did me well for a long time though). I guess i'll just have to wait and see what happens.
Assuming that its true that games are two years behind based on development time, we won't be seeing anything truly made for any of the new SSE2 instructions, 64-bit extensions, programmable shaders and the like until about 3 years pass at best (assuming there is a standard to end on - Intel vs. AMD and ATI vs. Geforce).
I am kinda looking forward to Shadowbane and Morrowind... but i'm not sure i can handle another online game after everquest - oy 🙂
