Ok, I use Redhat 7.2

I don't like anything besides what comes with it. (I'm not a linux techie)

and, In your humble opinions,

WHICH IS BETTER???

I have always like KDE personally, but thats just me.

Which is better, blonde, brunette, or redhead? None. They are all great. Variety is the spice of life. Why should it be limited to women and alcohol? With Free/Open Source UNIX-like operating systems, you can have variety in your computer use too. My vote is for no.

In the run of those 2 I prefer Gnome. However, I really don't like either.

I have tried these in the recent past:

Enlightenment, WindowMaker, SCWM, IceWM, Sawfish, FVWM, FVWM95, TWM/VTWM, MWM, CTWM, and AfterStep and just keep going back to Blackbox.

i have never used KDE, i used gnome/sawfish for a short while, it was ok but neither are my bag of chips. i use blackbox, although window maker seems nice too.

i hate desktop icons, taskbars, and 'start' buttons, and applications that get installed that i never wanted....

my vote is for....neither =)

Between those two, I'd hafta say KDE.

Faster, more useful(load and loads of useful features that you find as you go along using it).

And many of the utilities that come with it are awesome.

I use KDE when I have decent boxes with decent amounts of RAM, if Im on more of a budget, I go with XFCE.

I'm using IceWM now. Still need to try ROX....

KDE is (becoming) way too bloated, just like Gnome. Blackbox is too limited in its functionality and very inconvenient IMHO.

Gonna hafta disagree here.

KDE gives you a great deal of freedom in the bloat or no bloat department.
There isn't a whole lot of stuff you need to install if you dont want it, and if you turn off the eyecandy, it's very speedy.

Its running fine on an old Sparc 5(85 MHz with 256 MB RAM I believe, not my box).
2.1 was somewhat troublesome, but 2.2 fixed most of the issues with 2.1

I say KDE. It's faster, purty-er and just feels smoothers. It's also not bloated if you configure it to not be (as Sunner pointed out). You have your various packages (graphics, multimedia, games, network, pim, admin, utils) that are completely optional and even within those that you do install you can exclude whatever apps you want.

In my short time with Linux i have to say i prefer KDE. It simply feel/looks better to me.

I like many of the programs written for Gnome such as Evolution. The programs for Gnome feel/look higher quality to me than programs for KDE. Yet Gnome itself does not feel/look as good!

But then what do i know? (Don't answer that!!)

I've only been using Linux as my primary OS for 4 months (and my only OS for 1) so I have not yet really decided on my favorite. I've been using KDE most of the time, but I find it to be a bit on the bloated side. It takes 12 seconds to start on my dual P3, and that's 11.5 seconds too long in my opinion. :D

There are, however, two environments that I just plain hate: GNOME and Enlightenment.

Electrode, thats funny, it barely takes 12 seconds on the dual P2-350's Im on now.
I havent timed it, but I'd estimate 10 seconds, +/- 5 secs or so, I'll time it for you next time I restart it.

Yay! 3 for Gnome!

If you don't mind spending a lot of time getting it set up just right (and occasionally ironing out a bug), I think Gnome gives you a lot more freedom than KDE. I could never get the feel of KDE quite correct for my tastes.

hehhe....after X starts up, blackbox is up in like well under a second =)

Of the two, KDE. I do prefer a command line for the sake of memory conservation...

XFCE gets my vote overall, though.
