The African-American baseball player is vanishing. Does he have a future?

Interesting article about how so few African American players play baseball, perhaps attributed to greater marketing of basketball and football to that demographic.

What I find intriguing is that, physically, by looking at the players on most teams, you might think there's a significant amt. of African-American players. For example, to me, Armando Benitez and Timo Perez of the Mets both "look" African-American (at least in skin complexion). By their last names tho', you can tell they're of Latino origin.

Those guys "look African American" because they are black. African Americans are also black. North America had African slaves, South America had African slaves, Central America had African slaves, the English speaking Caribbean had African slaves, the Spanish speaking Caribbean had African slaves.

So apparently they are not counting the African Caribbean players? So there are less African American players but a lot more African Caribbean players?

It's all too damn confusing!!

Yeah, I guess they're not counting them, or at least the players themselves don't considering themself to be African-American, but rather, Latino or West Indian perhaps.
 
My ex GF is white, but both parents were born and raised in Africa, so I guess she is African American.
I think she sucks at baseball. Oh well.

I concur. We seem to have this perception that one cannot be Latino and Black. The Caribbean, South and Central Americas have similar history as far as migration, plantation, slavery, etc. So they have Blacks there. They're just Spanish, Portuguese or French speaking Blacks.

On the other hand, RishiS could have meant African American as a nationality instead of race. If he meant that, well I guess I would agree.
 
While there are perhaps less US ballplayers of African descent there seems to me to be an ever increasing number of ballplayers in general of African descent. Lots come from the D.R., P.R., etc. It seems they pretty much own baseball these days.

According to the 2003 Racial and Gender Report Card, prepared by Richard E. Lapchick of the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport at the University of Central Florida, the number of blacks (defined as U.S.-born African-Americans) in the major leagues dropped almost by half from 1995 to 2002 -- from 19% to 10%. The number is down 63% from 1975, when blacks filled 27% of roster spots.

To me, this is ridiculous that they don't count those blacks of foreign birth.
