I have been living under a rock apparently because I only recently heard of the upcoming Tin Tin movie that is slated for December. Awesome, I remember watching the animated series when I was a kid. Interestingly enough though, I don't think the British adaptation of the animated series had that much charm to it.

I think they might be NSFW but who knows what they're saying.

Did you read the one where he goes to Africa? It was amazingly non-PC.
They were all pretty non-PC... the Indians in the America one, the natives in the South America one, the Chinese in the China one, the Arabs in the Middle Eastern ones... The books were definitely a touch on the racist side. But they were entertaining. I had them all... still do somewhere I think.

That said, I don't have many hopes for a film adaptation. I just think it will be a complete disaster.

They weren't racist as much as they were a reflection of European attitudes at the time. In the one where he goes to Africa for example his depiction of Africans isn't hateful, but it is somewhat patronizing/condescending.

i am more interested in Captain Haddock's various curses. I always read those dialogues out aloud. Spielberg's involved in this movie...so hopefully it won't suck. And I hope they keep all the non-pc stuff in...although that's highly unlikely

I suspect they'll PC it to death. Which will take much of the charm away. My expectations aren't high. Still, I'll watch the thing - why not?

As a child I used to read all those Franco-Belges bandes dessinées at the library during the 60s and early 70s: Tintin, Spirou et Fantasio, Le Marsupilami, Blake & Mortimer (I still have the three tomes of the Espadon series), Yoko Tsuno, Achille Talon, Dan Cooper, Tanguy et Laverdure, Lone Sloane, Corto Maltese, Martin Le Malin, Métal Hurlant, Pilote, Astérix, Gaston Lagaffe, La Rubrique-à-Brac, Iznogoud, Lucky Luke, Valérian, Cubitus, Jo, Zette & Jocko. Also Aviation Magazine and Rock & Folk. Good times.

They did not carry Hara-Kiri (ce journal bête et méchant où l'on retrouvait les chroniques du professeur Choron). Had to buy that one. Pif Poche was a favourite also.

I've never read Tintin in English. I'm sure it would feel/sound weird to me.

As to the attitudes, one appeal of Tintin was the exploration of exotic cultures and locales. Prior to the mid 70s, airplane travel was not as prevalent and there was far less contact with places like Japan, China, Africa, South America for the average person. Now we're a bit jaded in that regard.

Old thread but I just watched this movie and I thought it was awesome. The recreation of the city is life-like and visuals are stunning. It's also funny.
