I'd go with something like

Lian Li's V-2100 Case

PC Power And Cooling SLI Express

2 x Nec 3520As
1 x Flash Memory Read
1 x Floppy Drive

DFI's UT Nforce 4 SLI Model
-Some PCI-Express S-ATA Card (For the extra hard drives)

-2xRaptors (One for Winblows and another for Linux Distros)
-12x500GB Hitachis - (Got to have lots of files ;) )

2xG6800 Ultras with some kind of water cooling

2x80 MM Radiators for the Graphics card

1x120MM Radiator for Proc

That sounds good :)

M/B: Tyan Thunder K8W

CPU: 2x Dual Opteron 250

Video Card: 1x :)( no SLI on server based boards) Link (With Waterblock)

Sound Card: (Un)creative Audigy 4Pro

HDD Controller: Adaptec 64bit PCI-X Ultra 320 SCSI RAID

HDD: 5x Seagate 73 Gig 15,000RPM SCSI HDD (68Pin) in RAID 5
(Or if i really had an unlimited budget i would get one of those drives that accept a whole lot of sticks of RAM and keep them charged making a REALLY fast HDD)

Mouse: MX1000 Laser Mouse

Keyboard: Logitech Elite

Of course i could always up the level again and go to a 4 or 8 CPU setup... but then that ventures into the realm of enterprise computing. So well keep it on the Consumer level (Barely)

Anyway to make this thing better? Anyone have any suggestions (God i wish i had a budget large enough to buy something like that)

I guess i would really need a true 64bit OS to address more than 4gig of RAM, i think i might have passed 4gig :p

amd if u got the money why not have the Audigy 4pro? it is actually better than the 2 apparently

PCX is the abbreviation for PCI-E. Not to be confused with PCI-X.

1) I don't game. Guess what I do?
2) good luck driving 2 9 megapixel lcds and a 30" cinema display with anything BUT workstation class hardware. DVI-DL ports are a must, and last I checked, the mac 6800 ultra was the only consumer card that had them.

Man, for 8630 bucks, I'd want something a lot more awesome than that...hell, at least seperate watercooling loops, one for each GPU and the FX itself. 1/10, for sheer cost inefficiency.

Not very impressive, could do alot better. Maybe it's a dream system till you wake up. ;)

Here's what I'd consider a dream machine:

Dual Opteron 250's
Iwill dual cpu/ SLI mobo w/ 4 gigs of ram
LSI 64bit/133mhz scsi raid controller
6 - Maxtor Atlas 15k 73g hd's
Audigy4
Dual 6800GT's
2 - 20" Dell LCD or your choice
CoolerMaster Stacker case w/ 2 - 4-in-3 devices
700w Zippy power supply
2 - NEC 3500a
whatever mouse/keyboard is your preference.

This is a real Dream system...

Regards,
Jose

My dream system would also come with solar panels for the roof, and a backup battery that would last for a full day, with the monitor on.
I'd also want it to have good voice recognition software that could understand me from across the room.

Not a bad thought, but I don't think you wil see a dual Opteron AND SLI, as the only chipset right now is the AMD 8000 series, and that has no support for SLI. I don;t know that you need that anyway, and for gaming the FX-55 is faster than dual 250's anyway.

THat doesn't have a server connector. You need IIRC an EPS connector or even something different for some of these boards.

As for SLI and dual opterons no there isn't one :( i decided dual CPU's would be better than dual video cards.

No the FX-55 will be not faster for gaming--even more so once games become multi threaded. The only advantage it has is the ability to use unregistered DRAM, and an unlocked multiplier. Other than that it is the same CPU (different pin out).

Lots of stuff in that 'dream' rig would be useless for gaming, so I think the rest of us were under the assumption that the rig was for both work and play.

Dual monitors, for example, are useless for all but a very small number of games. As a matter of fact, I'd say it's about the same number of games that can take advantage of SMP.

Yes, but one monitor could be playing something like EQ2, while you're camping and regenerating, and the other monitor used for porn or I mean *ahem* schoolwork. :D

That doesn't work for full screen games (most of the time). Most games will prevent you from taking focus away without using protected keys (ctrl+alt+delete, ctrl+esc). That can also cause problems with the game once it regains focus.

Of course, you could be talking about windowed games, but who really plays games like that? :)

I still maintain that the OP's dream rig was not intended soely for gaming.

there's at least two manufacturers that have SLI opteron boards very close to available.

Iwill has an x16/x2 board almost out, and in a month or two will have an x8/x8 follow up.

the tyan I listed is likely out in a couple weeks, and has two ck8-04s...and for some time will be the only board with x16 + x16 lanes (not that it matters a great deal though) I want it just to run 4 high res monitors with full 3d acceleration and some dual core optys

and...250s = 2.4 Ghz, the fx 55 is 2.6. different chips. the supposed 252 would be the equivalent

Now now children, hold your horses.

This isn't my dream system...Its just a configuration I compiled at some of the online vendors from the likes of AlienWare.
These are the best parts they had. Talking about http://www.velocitymicro.com/ here.

I already have 2 64bit rigs that costed me $4000 to build, watercooling, dual 17" lcds, ATI X800XT, 2 GB ram, 0.5 TB storage, sat. tv cards, everything.

So stop flaming me...Gees

I'm sorry you'll have to excuse all of us misunderstanding. We must have been misled by your original post.

The prices of dream configurations dropped, it used to be $15k for a dream config few years ago.

I guess "dream configuration" must not equal "dream system" in your world.

And to think...my 1800 dollar computer would likely perform just as good with a game not supported by SLI.
