The 8 Core CPU: Are they replacing 4 Cores as the standard? (Poll Inside)

Dude, your next mainstream i7 will be faster than an overclocked 6950x. That's basically just 2 years later and $1,300 cheaper than 6950x. The mainstream 8/16 i7 will be clocked so high when OC'd I expect it to actually beat 6950x in almost everything. And many people think AMD had nothing to do with it. Yep, Intel was simply in the mood to give us a $1,700 CPU for $400 only 2 years later. This sounds crazy but Intel literally has no choice, because as you pointed out, if Intel wants to avoid the confusion about which company has the better CPU, they have to go 8/16 and they need to do it right damn now.
This is awesome because I don't have to spend high end money to get my next CPU upgrade. I can go back to the mainstream platform and save cash because 8/16 is just where its at now.

Well since I have to save up the money first anyway, I hope that 8c/16t will be mainstream by the time I build a new rig.

When you look at the data we have now we see: Zen (8 Core) > Coffee Lake (6 Core) > Zen+ (8 Core refined?) > Ice Lake (8 Core) > Zen 2 (12 Core).

Now, do I believe 8 Core is gonna be the standard for Gaming and Productivity?
Absolutely yes, and it's all happening before 2020.

Is it gonna be the same for Web Browsing, Light Media and Office PCs?
No, even when Zen 2 arrives, I believe the cheapest and most accessible is gonna be a 6 Core Processor.

The time is right, 7 years ago I quit PC Gaming and went back to Consoles, but things are much better now. We're close to achieving Photorealism and in order to create a realistic world in a convincing matter, heavy AI use is inevitable, which leads to more processing power and better utilization. We have seen a glimpse of the future this year with Assassin's Creed Origins, heck the game utilizes a Threadripper, which is very impressive. More to come and i'm looking forward to seeing it.

Asus has a laptop with a desktop Ryzen 1700 in it. I don’t recall the model off hand.

The big question is whether any modern operating system can even use 8 cores effectively. I think many problems are still related to Browsers and Windows. Motherboards may not be keeping up with Modern CPU's either. Then there is inefficient use of RAM which might also go back to a clunky OS that still addresses RAM using a system built on DOS Memory architecture.

Sure, they can use almost as many cores as you can throw at them IF the software supports it. Many DC projects work just fine with 128 threads/cores or more. I only have 16 cores/32threads in 3 boxes, but they are all very well used.
Linux also uses them even better than windows.

Consoles are stuck with 8 narrow, low clocked cores that barely hold a candle to the best dual cores out there. Console games don't even have access to all 8 of them, so until the window of performance improves, most PC gamers have no real reason to sport more than 4 modern cores.
