The 64 bit thread

Starting a list of all the 64 bit applications available that can or will have to replace 32 bit applications.


Firewall: Tiny Firewall 64,

Anti-virus: Avast 64,

Dameon Tools: FileDisk64

mIRC: ?

Disk Image: WinImage 7.0,


NOTE: Many 32 bit apps run fine under Windows XP x64 but some apps like firewalls and antivirus software require a driver and since x64 requires a 64 bit driver it means the app won't run until a 64 bit driver is written.

So? The OP doesn't mention anything about AMD64. And there is an AMD64 port, it's just not official yet because it didn't make it for sarge.

PS And if it really scares you, MS fixed a crash issue mIRC had with XP64 in one of the builds between RC2 and gold :Q

You can continue to use inferior software for the rest of your life. I'll use irssi. If I had to choose a gui IRC client for win32, I'd use IamC.

Ahh, I guess you're going with Alpha or sparc64 ports.

For the most part it's irrelevant, 95% of the packages compile and run on 32-bit and 64-bit architectures just the same. Once you've worked out the bugs porting to Alpha the port to AMD64 will be painless.

And the point of that page is: There is no AMD64 port of Debian.

But there is, all the infrastructure is setup, the autobuilders are going, etc. It's just not going to be released with sarge.

You'll pry my copy of mIRC from my cold dead hands, and then I'll turn around and have it ported to a Mac just to spite you.

I used to think the same thing, but after you've used a good client it makes you wonder what people like about mIRC. The only thing I can think of is the simple scripting because the UI is terrible, it took them many years to add multiple server support and from what I heard the multiple server support is pretty bad anyway and last I checked it wasn't multi-user capable, meaning it still kept your config directly in the mIRC directory which is stupid.

Currently use No name script with mirc myself just really accustom to.

And for all of the other OSS software that Debian's helped make 64-bit clean over the years. Do you not recognize that everything, except for the low-level tools, that ships with OpenBSD also usually ships with Linux?

There isn't an official AMD64 port of Debian.

The AMD64 port is currently waiting to be included into the official Debian archive.

aka: It's not yet part of Debian. 😕

EDIT: It was fun, but I'm done with this. They don't have a stable AMD64 port. Still. No matter what anyone tries to say, but a beta is good enough. 😉

There is still plenty of software out there that is having issues on non-x86 platforms.

Mostly only bigger things like KDE and O😵, but that's because the GCC people keep messing with the C++ ABI. And Debian is constantly working to iron out the issues, the problem is there's not as many people running KDE or O😵 on sparc64 or Alpha these days so the bug reports are slow.

aka: It's not yet part of Debian.

It's part of Debian, it's just still in beta and has a back seat to Sarge's release. Debian still hosts the autobuilders, bug reports, mailing-lists, etc even though it's set for a future release.

Depends. Generally if something doesn't work on a 64-bit system a bug is filed and eventually gets fixed, aircrack is a good example. I tried it on my Alpha a few weeks ago and it would segv on startup, endian issues IIRC, and I noticed this week that someone filed a bug and it was fixed upstream already.
