Yep! I don't listen to (or watch) or read advertising!

Most of it is aimed at an elementary grade educated person anyways. Sometimes, the stupid sugar-filled cereal commercials make more sense than those directed at adults! 🙄

How do you know if you "don't listen to (or watch) or read advertising!"

Because they are not real people. They are paid actors 😛 I saw some car commercial just the other day that was like "Lets get the impressions from real actual owners" and right below the people they walk up to it says "Paid Actor".

Gee...no wonder they talked so highly about your product 😛

Fuck 5 Hour Energy!

Bribery is a completely different issue, and I don't see the difference in ordinary conversation between "What cigarette do you smoke?" and "What cigarette do you carry?" either. It's rare to bum a smoke off of a guy that doesn't smoke.

You don't see the difference? The question is COMPLETELY different: They "carry" what you gave them unless they hate it so much that they would get rid of it or love it so much that they smoked them all between the hotel and the conference that morning. It's the difference between "Do you buy, smoke, and/or prefer Camel?" and "are those Camels that you have in your pocket?". One means more than the other as far as brand importance. The doctors did not know that they received them from the company and they did not know that the person asking had anything to do with the smokes found in their hotel rooms. It was not bribery: They had NO IDEA that they were even giving an endorsement.

I thought all adults knew that advertising can't be trusted. A company stating its product is "the best" or "better than the leading brand" should hold no clout, because the company is biased. Even if a study is involved, the study was biased in such a way to find its product the best.

I thought that people rarely watched commercials with the ubiquity of the DVR. For me the only time TV commercials are played is during live sports, and I mute them and do something else during that time. Or I'll often pause the TV for 20 minutes to be able to fast forward commercials again.

I also change the radio station when commercials come on.

This is why we need actual, credible sources of information.

It doesn't work to just say 'they all lie'.

If you do that, then you don't think cigarettes are bad for you - that study lies.

You don't believe climate change is happening - that study lies.

Unfortunately, there's always pressure from the interested people to lie - electing politicians who will hide the truth, like the Bush White House censoring reports.

...Even if a study is involved, the study was biased in such a way to find its product the best...

Even if it were a legitimate 3rd party study, they would only use it if it came out in their favor.

Like when GM says "car X was Car and Driver's top rated car in category Y"

Car and Driver magazine may be a legitimate 3rd party source, but each ranking will only ever be used by whatever product came in 1st.

I thought about going back and editing my post, but you already called out some of the deficiencies 🙂. I would say that advertising for a product category or an idea can be effective. i.e. Cigarettes will kill you. You need a smartphone because it will let you do all these cool things. If you had a big truck, you could haul that big boat you've been wanting. etc.

So, that part I understand, and I think that advertising can be effective in that regard. The part I don't understand is when people believe the advertisements about one truck being better than another or one smartphone being better than another. I personally use unbiased professional reviews for making decisions for such items, but it seems that others buy things largely based on the very biased marketing of the manufacturer.

They would not exist if what you thought was true, so why you would think that is beyond me.

Sure, but in that case at least the genuinely bad products won't be top-rated by any legitimate 3rd party source, and so they can't boast about their 3rd party endorsements.

There's a billboard near Lansing on 96 for
"Michigan's #1 rated Dentist!"*

*As rated by our office staff

The whole fine print thing is getting a bit old...
lol, that's great. :awe:

When driving to the U.P. from lower Michigan, after the Mackinac Bridge a ways there's a sign for the "Mystery Spot". I always chuckle to myself when I see the sign and their "Rated #1!" slogan. LOL, #1 what? Ripoff? Hahaha.

ya i noticed that energy drink word play. recommend something to someone that is already using that something anyway. But i think my fav is most car commercials. Showing people happily driving thru empty city streets or out on empty twisty countryside roads. Driving at well above legal speed limits while performing maneuvers that would get your car impounded for street racing or stunting. All the while most know the reality that is gridlock and traffic chaos in most modern cities.

I think the Family Guy "Freakin' Sweet" collection had a quote on the back that said something like "Seth McFarlane is a comedic genius" -Seth McFarlane.

Professional driver. Do not attempt.

Just remembered all those "male enhancement" products that are "Guaranteed," "Clinically Proven," etc when they never EVER define "male enhancement." What we insinuate means nothing. Even when they say that it will make you "larger," they never said WHAT will be made larger. I could sell you water and say that it does anything in the world and cures AIDS as long as I offer a money-back guarantee.
