the 4 rubber things on my duron

I recently ordered an guranteed 980-1050mhz duron CPU. I noticed that when i held my global-win heatsink and fan against the CPU, the heaksink does not touch the silver chip in the middle. There are four black rubber things that the heatsink sits on, and is preventing contact between the heatsink and the chip.

My question is, is it safe to remove those rubber things so the heatsink can sit directly on the chip?

I suspect that if i remove the rubber pads, the heatsink my not sit flatly on the CPU, because the center chip is so small. This is why I haven't removed the rubber pads yet. I appreciate any input on this, and I am looking forward to the replies.

The 4 pads on the processor are there to help the heatsink be flat against the core and also to help spread some of the heatsink's weight, to reduce core crushing.

Yeah, I definately wouldn't remove the pads. They are supposed to be there to distribute the weight. Are you sure the heatsink you have is AMD Approved? Some of the older global wins are not, and can either crush your core, or let it burn up.

The clip should compress the pads to make contact. The pads are there to stabilize the processor, you're absolutely right about the tendency of larger HS's to cruch TBirds. If you're still worried about it, put it on once, & then remove it carefully. You should be able to see the shape of your die on the HS. If the paste in that spot is so thin you can barely tell it's there it's working fine.

If you still have trouble, consider removing the pads & purchasing a copper spacer. This will accomplish the same thing as the pads, but without the need for compression. There are people selling them in FS/FT for $6 shipped.

I am a global-win fan i bought for my socket370 celeron 2 years ago, I forget the model number. Is there a heatsink+fan combo I should buy for my duron, one that would provide enough force that it would push down on the rubber pads hard enough to make solid contact with the chip in the middle?

The heatsink+fan is rather old (2 years), and I am guessing that the metal springs have lost some tension and isn't providing enough force to pusht he rubber pads down enough. I will try to bent the springs some more to get more tention in them. Thanks for the help.

If it's that old, then no, it probably won't work properly on the Duron. There are a lot of good coolers to get that should work for you:

Alpha Pal 6035 <--Good performer, around same noise as FOP32, around $25
Alpha PEP 66 <--Pretty quiet, very good cooler, around $28-30
Taisol CGK742092 <--Very Quiet, around $23
GlobalWin FOP 32 <--Good balance of cost/performance/noise, around $20
GlobalWin FOP 38 <--Seems to be the best, but is VERY loud, around $23

All of these are US prices.

A good place to buy from is 2cooltek

In fact, Anand just finished a HSF roundup, you should still be able to see it on the main Anandtech page.
