Per Sid's recommendations, I reconfigured the GPU and SMP clients one the one machine. Both cores are running at 100%. Everything looks good. The GPU is processing 1% of the wu every 8 1/2 minutes. I'm not sure about the SMP client. ... will continue to monitor my machines remotely from my ex-wife's house, and I'll let you know more in a while.

Outstanding news

The GPU client at 8.5 minutes per frame sounds fine. That's less than a day (1440 minutes in a day) for the WU. Now just see how the SMP is doing after a while.

I love it when a PC comes together!

The SMP client has been working more than 1.5 hours and hasn't changed by 1% yet.

Should I have enabled the affinity changer?

Affinity changer doesn't work with 1 Smp and 1 Gpu, only 2 Smp's will it work properly.

That means it's probably *hung* and it won't give you anything do to the cpu.
You could probably try to set Affinity manually and set the smp cores to 1 core and the Gpu to 1 core but With a dual core, I think your best bet is the Gpu by itself.

I did however get lucky with my E7200 rig as I got an Ati card and a smp to run at the same time. But the smp took quite a long time to complete as comaired so I yanked the Ati and just ran the smp alone with it and got better results.

I hope you can get it resolved to your liking...:)

OK -- I have enabled the affinity changer with "-configonly" -- how do I set it manually?

You are right. SMP is taking a long time. I'm going to watch it for a little while to see how it is doing.

Thanks Drsignguy!!!

Speaking of Fastra, check out their GPU temps.
link

One of them gets up to 100C!!!!!

I'm wondering how they keep their GPUs running, at those temps, when my lowly 9600GSO apparently died at 96C for two weeks.

If they can sustain those temps, then what killed my GPU, if it wasn't heat?

If you use "ctrl-alt-del" keys and start task manager, go to processes and find all (4) Fahcore_a1.exe. right click on each 1 and manually set to core "0" and do the same to Fahcore_11.exe, which is the Gpu and set it to core 1.

If you are setting affinities manually, you probably want to set two of the SMP processes to core 0 and two of them to core 1.

I recommend against that method because you have to manually re-set them everytime the client finishes a work unit.

The "affinity changer" is a utility that you download and do a one-time installation. It takes care of itself from then on. (the affinity settings with -configonly have been widely rumored to be useless) It is designed to help spread the load for a single SMP client on a dual core machine.

you can download and read about the affinity changer at this site

The SMP client was too slow. I stopped both clients and restarted SMP with the -oneunit switch. It's at 97%. I'm going to try Sid's suggestion and download the single core client and run it with the GPU client. If that doesn't give me more ppd than SMP by itself, I'll go back to the SMP without the GPU.

Sid is correct. But the only reason for the suggestion was to see if your client would at least start crunching and to see if any results would show up. It does suck that you have to change every time. I did try the affinity changer in the configuration section but it doesn't work. I wish it did.............:frown:

Btw what ppd do you get on your 4850s?

Now I'm getting 4100 ppd on each 4850. Anyone know why the ppd numbers vary so much? I haven't done anything to the PC since early this morning?
Also, the 2nd card won't work unless it is hooked up to a monitor.
Anyone know how to fool Windows into thinking a monitor is there if it isn't. I'm thinking of using a spare KVM cord. Besides that, anyone have any ideas?

I wonder what that Fastra rig's ppd would be? 40k? :D

Yea personally I would never use any auto-overclocking program, the only 1 that ever found that worked was ATItool's auto overclocking, however that hasn't been updated in over a year so doesn't support newer cards. Although you can still use the fury cube to test manual overclocks :) (which is want you want to do if you want to over clock GPUs).
Btw different WUs give different ppd, but WUs of the same project should be near enough the same, I think! ;).

Re Fahmon ,not AFAIK, would be handy though!
Re FASTRA's rig, & the rest ,it's got 8 GPUs remember ;)

Also, the 2nd card won't work unless it is hooked up to a monitor.
Won't work at all?, maybe some power saving feature?

VirtualLarry
Yea they let their GPUs get very hot! :Q
Btw if you read the whole lot you'll see they ran it with the side pannel off to bring temps down to just over 90C, but that's still toasty!.

rabrittain
I think the idea is you just ditch affin changer with a dual core rig.

Sid
I thought affin changer was primarily for 2xSMP on quad core rigs?

I did too for a long time. Recently, I was asked about it, and went back to the site to read up.

On a quad rig it only helps if you have 2 SMPs running (this is what I mistakenly was repeating as "it's only for 2 SMPs on a quad")

As it turns out, it is for 1 SMP on a dual or 2 SMPs on a quad.

I know I told a lot of people wrong in past posts... hoping for forgivness.

Look at my quad-GPU rig thread, and google for "VGA dummy".

OK -- On the one machine I'm using a GPU client and a uniprocessor client. It seems to be working.

Is there a way to get FAHMON to report on the uniprocessor client. I shared the folder that it installed to, and I added the client, but it never reported anything. It just said "N/A". I waited a couple of hours. Nothing ever happened.

edit: 12/24/2008 ~2135 pst -- OK -- I found the correct folder for FAH x86 and FahMon.

Yea!!

So ... my goal with the gpu was to raise my ppd. It didn't work. The gpu and the uniprocessor together don't put out as much as smp.

When the current wu's are done I'm changing back to smp.

I learned a lot. If I had 2 graphics cards, it would be better. But every now and then I like to play a game -- so it would pain me not to have the graphics cards in crossfire mode. It's something to consider though. -- maybe next year.
