the 3D card with an all-around good 2D?

I'm looking to upgrade from a Voodoo 3 right now, and I want to get something
to go into a new system i will be getting a bit later this year, and maybe to put into my aging p3-450 until then.

So I would like to get something from the Geforce2 line, but I am concerned with the 2D of it. I know that this is really dependent on the brand, so I wanted to see if you guys had any tips as to what manufacturer makes a Geforce2 based card with the best all-around 2D. I'm probably not gonna go above 1248 on it in day to day stuff, but it would be nice if it could handle 1600 on occasion. (I have a 19" Sony E400 Trinitron).

Another thing that I don't really see discussed much in these forums, is legacy app compatibility. I play a lot of older games, so a card's ability to handle 320 x 200 (in 256 colors and in 15/16/24/32 bits) is kinda important. I know that some of the newer cards aren't very graceful at handling these extremely lo-rez modes. Do they still make cards that support VESA 2 in hardware? (As you can see I haven't shopped for a video card in quite a while).

Is all of this simply too much to ask from a card? Or at least from a Geforce2 based card? I am willing to shell out some cash, so much so that I am considering waiting for a Geforce3, but only if it will offer good 2D compatibility.

Check out this thread for some good info.

Summary: Inno3D seems to have good 2D video quality, among the best of the GeForces. Also good are Elsa and ASUS. Bang for the buck prize goes to Inno3D, however.

Yeah, I've gone through the thread (after having posted), but while it seems to address the hi-rez modes in 2D, it doesn't really cover the low resolution stuff. I have a bunch of older gams and demos on my machine that I would hate to see stop working because I picked a wrong card to get a bit more polys in the latest shooters.
