The 270hp VW Passat W8...

<< How much will that thing cost? >>

Ive heard btwn $35-38 but i could be totally wrong.. Im gonna go find out... 🙂

I did see it in a magazine ad...something about them changing the shape of the engine instead of the shape of the car...

cost is just under 40k with the only option, the 6 cd changer. This is a Tiptronic. Vortex says the 6 speed manual is a delayed introduction. I would want the manual myself

Make one helluva fast wagon 🙂

Closest competition I suppose (excepting Audi) would be a 5 series BMW. Lot less cash too. Not an exact match, but nothing japanese or american like it.

Very few companies can pull off this upmarket business without hurting sales. VW should really set up some clear definitions between Audi and itself. Because as a consumer, its hard to justify spending that much on a VW, when you can get the increased cachet of an Audi for a similar price.

Not true. See what a COMPARABLY equipped A6 goes for. I can tell you as a Passat owner, the car is a hellava lot nicer than a Tarus or equivalent japanese car.

Exactally... When we got our passats, the only car from Audi in its price range was an A4 (which was touching $29500). The Passat is much larger than an A4, and IMO a much better value for the money...

Big mistake IMHO. I wouldn't pay $40k for a Passat. I'd rather have a loaded A4 or a prev-gen S4 and screw the W8 over.

The W8 makes no sense to me in a car like the Passat. Who the f*&k is going to buy a W8 Passat?? The fact that a Passat starts at $21,000 and goes to $40,000 shows you that VW is f*&king around too much with their product lines. Anytime you can DOUBLE the price of the same basic car, I say that you are adding too many features to a car that doesn't deserve it.

Get a loaded 3-Series and drop kick the Passat from here to timbucktu.

I love VW's, but I think this attempt to move upscale is going to fail. I just don't see it working, there's not enough distinction between Audi and VW. Sure the Passat is a larger A4, but for 39,000 dollars I'd buy an A6. And as for the upcoming Phaeton, well there is the A8/S8. And of course don't forget how VW loves to shaft us here in the US. No 1.8T manual 4 motion, no Passat TDI, no Golf 4 motion, no 6 speed W8, less color choices, less standard equipment (Euro spec passats get ESP)....The list goes on and on. Almost makes me want to move to Europe.

edit: Pics of the Euro spec W8 Those wheels are awesome! Lowered suspension, and an awesome blue color.
Boring US version, with no ESP.

Ive lost all respect, you have insulted my baby 🙁

The truth hurts 🙂

Don't get me wrong, the Passat is a nice vehicle...just not $40,000 nice no matter which way you slice it.

Touche

I do agree though... I wouldnt pay $40,000 for one when i can get a perfectly speedy turbocharged one for $26,500... 😀

Yeah and my bike kicks a BMW. But wait, they arent the same!!! That is my point. A4/3-series are a smaller car. I dont know how much time you have SPENT in these cars, but a Passat is superior to a lot of vehicles in the same class. You need to do a little more research here.

You aren't seeing the point here. The market doesn't need a W8 Passat. Nobody asked for one. VW is just doing this b/c they need a pilot run for the W8 engines (guinea pig).

The Passat is a nice vehicle, but not $40,000 nice...at least not here in the US. The American public does not equate VW with $40,000 vehicles. That's why the Phaeton is gonna be a hard sale IMHO.

I agree with NFS and Triumph. That price range is ridiculous.

And aphex, the stock 1.8T Passat is NOT what I'd call "speedy."

All that said, I still love Passats, and almost bought one, if it wasn't for the fact that my similarly (better, actually) equipped CL-S was a much better deal (and IMO, more fun to drive). The interior of the Passat is nicer, I'll give it that! 😀

To each his own... I used to drive a 115hp jetta....

Yah, what's up with that? 0-60 in 7.6 seconds or so is plenty respectable. Altho I admit the new crop of cars out now are faster, but it's still better than most of the cars out there. Low RPM torque is really fun, too. 😀
