The 2016 Olympics doesn't seem to be shaping up well...

Preparations for the 2016 Rio Olympics are the "worst" ever seen, according to International Olympic Committee vice-president John Coates.

The Australian said the IOC has taken "unprecedented" action by placing experts in the local organising committee to ensure the Games go ahead.

"The situation is critical on the ground," he said.

The news comes as Brazil faces a race to be ready in time for the Fifa World Cup, which starts in 44 days.

The world cup that starts is June is still on shaky ground IMO, and the 2016 Olympics is looking good either.

GG Brazil. :|

just when you thought Putin put up the most infamous games Brazil comes to rescue.

Gangs of off duty cops cleaning neighborhoods murdering children in the dozens every week sometimes nightly.

Rampant crony construction contracts. Bad materials already needing work before the buildings are even finished and political corruption destroying the organizational efforts.

Macumba!!!!!

I've got an idea! Let's give the Olympics to a third world country! What could go wrong?

Pipe down, whiners! I'm sure Brazil bought off the IOC fair and square, so quit complaining about it!

The only reason Brazil exists is so that the people living in Detroit can feel they have things pretty good by comparison.

The Olympics are a farce anyway. Get rid of the pomp and circumstance, give the athletes dirt tracks and farm fields to compete in. Let the swimmers race against the piranha in the Amazon and let the marathon runners and cyclists make their way through the streets of Rio on a normal business day.

THAT would be a test of athletic prowess.

Went to Rio in 86 when I was in the navy. I have to say it was huge disappointment. It was a crime ridden hellhole. Several people off of my ship were robbed - I was coming back from liberty with about 10 other guys when a larger group jumped us on the pier. A big fight ensured and none of us lost anything but everyone had plenty of bruises and black eyes as I am sure the hoodlums did. Probably 20% of our crew got VD out of there too (luckily I wore condoms even back then).

A huge shit hole and I will never go back.

exactly. I think letting a country like Brazil handle 2 huge events was to much for it.

combine the trouble they are having with building everything for the Olymnpics and the issues they are having with the world cup how it ends up can be rather deadly.

Not surprising, they seem to have all kinds of economic and political issues down there. I don't really have any desire to go there. Argentina on the other hand I definitely want to visit.

I have spent time in both countries growing up in both and I have to say both are very worthy of visits.

Culturally both countries have a ton to offer and have sights and experiences that are worth the trips. Brazil has sped towards modern times faster than most countries and have experienced the growing pains associated with growth unlike Argentina who comparatively has wallowed in misery though things have improved. Brazil has corruption issues on the scale of India and that cant be avoided but the experience of visiting outside of a tourist trap or two isn't really affected by the corruption and violence. If you live in a favela or slum then yes you see that violence every day.

The beaches of brazil and the Sao Paolo night life are worth a visit.

Now if you go watch the Goonies on the flight!

The cost for these facilities has gotten to the point where rrealistically there should only be about 6 countries hosting where each can have a couple sites that the games are rotated around.

Has that ever been done for the Olympics? I know in football two countries can and have hosted football competitions.

Exactly what I was just going to post.
There should be 3-4 permanent summer sites, and 3-4 permanent winter sites.

I don't know why these countries keep wanting to practically build a small city to host the Olympics anyway. They can't possibly recover the costs.

Yet they're still doing a better job than Toronto is on the Pan Am games next year.

Goonies 2 might be out by then! :D

Yeah Brazil concerns me for the same reasons as India does though I would rather visit India since I find their history far more interesting, plus I dig their food!. Thanks for the info though.
