Ugh, I got to about page 8 before I had to close it. Tom's Hardware is unreadable, 3 paragraphs of text framed in solid ads.

One of the greatest article exploits:

Taking a 5 page article and splitting it into 18 pages with ads everywhere so we makes the moneys.

I waded through the entire thing. There is hardly any real information in the whole 18 pages.

Dear god, it was about 3 sentences per page and just covered with ads. It was almost like Where's Waldo?

I used to go there quite a bit around 8 yrs ago. Now it's terrible.

You need hacker skill nowadays to set up your computer and browser to avoid all these ads

Yeah, but you still had to navigate through 18 pages what would have fit on 2. :p

Work has IE7 and even if it we used Firefox, clicking "Next" every 5 words is ridiculous.

Beaten! NOES!

It was a decent very vague read. Gives you enough to go research more. And they didn't say what year that first worm was. They also should have gone on more about the later worms. Blaster and love bug, mydoom etc. And at the end they say hacking giants have died down, just because. Well I think thats because they cant make huge hits like they used to. They should give credit there for the stronger encryption, more secure servers, more firewalls, and much better security on windows. A lot of measures are done in email programs too. we may just never see that kind of hacking again because it's 1000 times harder and more secure now adays. Those were simpler times, everything was new and so small. Computers were slow and weak. And that was taken advantage of and exploited.

Interesting topic, but extremely poorly laid out (there was no organizational structure to speak of; it starts out speaking about a few guys, jumps to someone else, comes back to the first few guys, goes back to someone else, randomly interjects some Russian kid, goes back to the first guys... it's not chronological, it's not by person, it's just a clusterfuck), very little specific detail, and spread out so that you have to click next page every 2 paragraphs. If you turned this in as a paper in high school you might get a C.

It did however interest me enough to look up some of the dudes on wikipedia. Of course, if they had written the article well in the first place, I wouldn't have needed to.

I guess I'm not as much as a hardcore nerd as some of you guys, it was a good read for me. I didn't know about much of this aside from kevin mitnick before.
I'm glad I was able to read this article without letting a few ads bother me. I guess my ADD isn't that bad after all.
Thanks OP :)

Read the article the other day and I tend to agree with the criticism. The article does have some interesting information, nearly all of which I've heard before, however. No offense to the writer, but it does read like a school report. It probably would have been understandable if it was structured like an in-depth list; however, it seemed like it tried to be a feature article at the same time. It also fails to go into much detail and lacks some focus, which is too bad, considering it's published on a tech site.

Maybe I'll get around to it later, but goddamn, what a shitty fucking site (layout-wise).

Horribly written article. It was all over the place. The layout... well, I think the rest of you covered that.

For a good Documentary on the subject, check out The History of Hacking. Should be on Google Video.
