The $15,000 Challenge...

My former high school is a Gates foundation funded institution, and as such, students have around $50,000+ a year to do community projects. Apperantly a group of students are drafting a proposal to build computers and give them away to non-profit organizations, they've asked me to help.

So the question is, if you had $15,000 (price must include shipping to Bellingham Wa, 98226) to build 20 computers (including monitor, keyboard/ mouse, and OS) how would you do it? $15,000 is the absolute limit.

I've got their first draft of the grant application and part list, I'll post the parts in a minute.

What are these computers for?

To learn office apps. some coding?
Or heavy mulitmedia use?

If it is just office applications and coding then you could easly get 20 machines for that money.

Get a Mac Mini, that'd really put a thorn in Bill's side🙂 Actually, it's not a horrid deal when you factor in the legal OS and included legal apps. However, if Windows is your aim, I'm sure that you'll easily be able to make 20 PCs within that price range. More power to you!

Easiest thing? Wait for a good dell deal. You could get a pretty reasonable desktop system (with WinXP Home) for about $350 w/ Celeron 2.5 GHz, 40GB HDD, 512MB DDR.... Dell takes the fun out of DIY. This should take care if shipping as well...

Add a 17" CRT monitor for about $100. Shipping? $30~40 ea?

I'd love to go get a stack of Dells, but apperantly the students are required to build the computers. Time really isn't an object for them, and most of them are still in the "building computers is fun" stage, so assembling each one is their idea of a fun afternoon (mine as well actually lol ).
