A GTX 1070 may get about 700,000 PPD according to this:

Unfortunately, this database has a strong bias towards too optimistic PPD estimations. Also, disregard any database entries which have fewer than ~20 samples. There is a high variability of PPD between different work units (WUs). Furthermore, The same GPU gives more credit under Linux than under Windows. How much more depends on the GPU, on the host CPU which feeds the GPU, and on other load on the host.

Regarding folding on CPUs vs. GPUs:

What @Ken g6 said. Folding@Home rewards not just the amount of work done, but also how quickly the results were returned. Meaning, a few fast folding slots get more credit than several slow folding slots, even if the latter perform the same absolute amount of work during the same period of time. This bias towards faster slots is because the scientists want to reward those from whom they get input for their research sooner. (Also, new work issued to volunteers may be based on work previously completed by volunteers.) @ao_ika_red posted a link to the credit formula in #446.

And because GPUs are so much better at folding than CPUs, it is not worth anymore to use CPUs with fewer than about 32 threads per slot. My rather energy-efficient Broadwell-EPs with 44, 56, or 64 threads per slot give credit/Joule (PPD/Watt) at about 1/2.5...1/3 of my NVidia Pascal GPUs. With smaller CPUs, PPD/Watt are much worse because of the nonlinear credit system.

Regarding the noise:

Over time, I have seen mentions of various ways to cope with the cooling requirements of folding hosts, and the associated noise:
  • leaving the side panel open, thus having only the noise of the card fans but not from case fans
  • putting the hosts into a separate room, the basement, or the garage
And of course what @crashtech said: Use Afterburner or similar tools to modify the GPU fan profile (or/ and to cap the power draw of the GPU).

I chose a luxury variant myself: Custom waterloops. That's because I have no spare rooms for my DC hosts. However, besides being an expensive approach to the cooling and noise problem, it is also only a partial solution: While large enough radiators allow to reduce fan noise a lot, there is still noise from GPU coil whine, and in case of larger loops which require adequate pump performance there is also some pump noise. Regarding coil whine, Folding@Home is the worst offender among the GPU DC projects which I tried so far. Coil whine is a bit higher pitched but more evenly under Linux than under Windows, because GPU utilization from F@H under Linux is higher and more steady than under Windows.

Some people build cabinets for their DC gear, with extra large fans for ventilation, and perhaps even mufflers.
 
Ok, I installed the client again, and it is using both my CPU and GPU right now.

So to get rid of it using my CPU, I click on 'Configure', 'Slots', and then select '0 CPU', and finally 'Remove'?

That's it! Then you should be generating at least as many PPD (Points Per Day) as I am. (Somewhere over 500,000, I'm thinking.)

OK, that's much better noise-wise. The combo between my CPU fan, case fans, and GPU fan was too noisy when it was pegging both my CPU and GPU. With just the GPU crunching now, I can easily deal with the little noise from GPU fan at 40% using Afterburner which keeps the card's temperature right at 60c.

Say, I should point out your Extreme Overcooking stats too. Because DC is no fun without stats. 🙂

Edit: Oh, and you'll start seeing your early return bonus after you've done ten work units successfully. You've done one so far, so that may take a day or two.

It would also be fun if we could beat Brony@Home by the same margin they had when all the missing results were added ...i.e. by 95M points. we "only" need to produce some 6M points more then Brony@Home during the past 23 days. Not impossible ... maybe hard.
 
UsandThem, I have one GTX1070 that does just north of 700,000 and one that does 650,000ish pts. On Linux. If you are using Windows that would be 20-25% less. Other clients I do not know..............
There will be some variability with the specific WUs you attract as well.

I am on Windows 10, and by looking in the web control page, it gives an estimate around 573,835 points per day.

That's leaving the GPU's core clock and memory clock at defaults, which show 1847 MHz core, and 3802 (7,604 effective) MHz memory. After wondering why my card's clocks were those figures, I Googled around and found when folding@home, the card runs it's memory around 500 MHz lower than the standard stock clock of 4004 MHz (8008 MHz effective), and the core clock which runs higher than the card's standard stated boost clock of 1721 MHz.

If anybody has any advice or suggestions on those settings, feel free to let me know.

Running the 1070 in windows on max gives me about 550000 per day. You should see a similiar number after you finished your 10th WU and start receiving the bonus points. And as someone who also dislikes noise, my fans run at ~45-50% speed with <70°C temperature. Its a bit louder than usual, but acceptable.

@UsandThem, your passkey was validated with 10 WUs, and you're really moving now! You're on page 5, but you should be on page 4 by tonight!

This also led me to some interesting discoveries. @tyft86, @SkyLinx (Skylynx85?), @Athlex, @StefanLenz, @mmaresko, @GSmith, did you all know that if you get a passkey and add it to your F@H clients, after 10 successful results you'll get a quick return bonus? That means lots more F@H points!

Edit: I think I'll PM some of these guys too.

@MarcelliusIkaP (@ao_ika_red?), I assume you know this, but you haven't returned 10 successful results with your passkey yet.

For example, I learned that every time I changed my username on F@H, I would lost all of my points and had to request a new passkey.

I lost the passkey for my old account. I made sure to save it for my new one.

It was so long ago that I ran F@H that I passed 5 years' worth of output in a few days... amazing how technology develops. And how nice the F@H client is now compared to days of old.
 
So...apparently miners have completely taken over the GPU market and 1080ti's are going for $1400 on amazon and newegg. If any of you guys would be interested in GPU's 1060 and up I can grab some for work for actual MSRP (or under, in a lot of cases with evga and asus). I don't mind helping other people out in the name of science. We also have the 1080 ti Strix AC holo backplated card that I super want but can't actually justify 😛
