Well it seems that you anandtech guys are the most familiar with opterons anywhere. So anyways I ordered s939 opty 146, and some ppl on other forums are saying they will require "registered" ram. Since a lot of you guys have opty's can anyone tell me 4 sure? thanks :D

Time to stop visiting those other forums...the 940pin Opty requires Registered Ram, the 939s do not.

The new opteron is basically just a rebadged version of the current San Diego cores, that are used on the A64 3700+, 4000+, and FX 55 and FX 57 these processors use the same cores same everything just different name. The opterons are produced with higher yield silicon therefore they are more likely to hit a higher OC, like the many of 3ghz you have most likely been seeing.

So treat it as a normal A64 socket 939, because thats what it is.

Using an opty right now and No ECC ram is required. Only the skt940 pin require the ECC ram.

if it a skt 939 opteron, it'll use regular ol ddr ram, if it skt 940 opteron it'll need to use the ecc register ram.
