Couple of things:

1. While it can be difficult to configure whatever it is you're trying to, CAPS-typing is not gonna get you anywhere.

2. What distro are you using? Some are easier (Mandrake, Corel, Suse) and some are more difficult (don't know them)

3. What are you trying to configure? Some of the distros are plug and play these days so you shouldn't have to worry about it.

Answers to these questions help the Anandtech community help you.

ok, after taking a little break, and decidign to go to sleep soon, i have calmed down a bit.

i was first using mandrake 7.2. im trying to configure my nic so i can connect to the internet, but im having NO luck whatsoever. the main reason is im not too familiar with the terms they are using as it applies to NT or 98.

my setup for my server is VERY simple

128mb
20gb
ASUS P2B-DS w/ 2 PII 400
3com NIC (linux found it)
IBM etherjet (linux hasnt found it)
5x dvd to use as CD-Rom
4x burner for backups

im not worried about my IBM right now, just my 3com. i cannot configure it to connect to the internet.

oh yea, i have posted numerous times with people responding, but i still was unable to configure my server.

i even tried installing redhat as someone suggested, so i put in my redhat 7.0 cd but couldnt even get past the partition part. 🙁

Uhh, you should really try linuxconf. If you don't want to mess with it, look /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ethx(probably 0) and check if there is everything OK. Then you should check /etc/sysconfig/network also (is gateway right?). Hope you get your box running soon 🙂

Look ... if you're a Linux VIRGIN, then I suggest you buy 'Linux 4 Dummies' book.

Believe me ... that's how I started. 🙂

KNOWING the BASICS is the first thung you need to do. It's no point trying to do what we've told you here ... cos you wouldn't understand it.
After you've done some 'homework' like studying some Linux HOWTO guides and books, and some Linux BASICS, then you'll have a more easier understanding for different Linux TERMS and COMMANDS.

Then you'll be ready to RULE the WORLD 🙂
... Remember ... that's how I started.

patience....keep trying at it with lots of patience and you'll become a Linux novice before you know it

Linux will be good when some big corporation takes it over, like Microsoft, and standardizes it. But that kind of goes against the whole free OS thing.

i thought the whole spirit of the linux thing is to toy around with it and learn while you do it. screaming about refusing to use an operating system until someone tells you how to set it up and then tells you how to use it...? *have* you bought a linux book? linux is a steep learning curve, and you should invest in a few books to get started. either that, or just stick to windows 95 or something... i mean, if you plan to run a server on linux, just having a few basic questions answered on here isn't going to help you. what's going to happen when it comes time to close all the holes, lock it down and make it secure? are you going to come here screaming again when someone breaks into it because you didn't do the necessary reading to secure it in the first place...? just some thoughts...

ok, i have an idiots guide to linux, i think that should suffice even though it is failry old.

ill will read that over the holiday, and come back and tackle my system.

problem is it mostly deals with the GUI on the Caldera version, but i think i can apply that here

OOyeve: Linux is pretty standardized OS, not like those Microsoft's OS'es 🙂. I really hope that Bill would never screw up linux. Microsoft =! standart !!!

I don't know why no one ever suggests it, but I find that Caldera eDesktop 2.4 is by far the easiest distro to install and use. I mean c'mon, you can play Pac-Man during the install for god sakes! How much easier does it get?
