Thats it, they have had enough...revenge of the machines!!!

were they going for a world's record on how many people could fit on an escalator? maybe they were over the weight limit and it malfunctioned.

edit: Actually "Revenge of the Machines" would be a good band name. 😀

So....I don't quite see what happened? Did people get sucked under the escalator? I'd expect to see a fair amount of blood if that had happened.
I'd also expect an escalator to have some kind of emergency stop or auto-stop built in in the event of a problem like this.

why doesn't the people on the top end of the elevator start walking upwards?

They've probably forgotten how, or lack the physical energy to do so.

In Tokyo? Riiiight. The entire city walks everywhere, including stairs all over the place.

Actually escalators can be randomly dangerous. In the Dallas Galleria mall a couple of Christmas(es) ago, my sister and I were shopping, and without thinking, we just kinda waited in line and got on a crowded escalator and started going down. There were tons of people everywhere down at the bottom, and some of the people that were getting off the escalator just stopped after they stepped off, either to be polite and wait for some people to pass by, or because they were stupid and they just started looking around. Either way, they just stopped in the middle of 100 people coming down an escalator, and eventually they were rather heavily pushed from behind as more and more people began arriving at the bottom without any place to go.

An escalator can never break, it can only become stairs. You should never see an "Escalator Temporarily Out Of Order" sign, just "Escalator Temporarily Stairs. Sorry for the convenience."

Heh, I remember escalators being such a dangerous obstacle when I was a little kid.

not a year goes by, not a year, that i don't hear about some escalator accident involving some bastard kid which could have easily been avoided had some parent - i don't care which one - but some parent conditioned him to fear and respect that escalator.

That kid is back on the escalator again!

Why are these people so stupid? The escalator was moving very slowly backwards, at about the same speed that it was moving upwards. You don't see people piling up at the top of the stairs, why would they be piling up at the bottom?

The only thing I can think of is that we just witnessed a collection of the dumbest people alive and they panicked when the elevator went backwards. Why the hell would you jump over the side of an escalator?

It's really not that hard to understand.

If the elevator wasn't so packed, it wouldn't have been an issue.

Jesus Christ, haven't they ever heard of single file? Or are they just too goddamn impatient?? No wonder the thing backed up, there were 100 people on one side alone!
