Built my sister a computer about three years ago. Was working great when it left my apartment. Two weeks later it was gone to hell. I get blamed and told I don't know how to build computers, etc. Finally about two months ago I had had enough of her sh!t so I made her order a dell. Installed XP Pro on it and it was working fine.

Fast forward to today when I receive a message from her. Simply states:
im trying to play winamp and it says i have a bad sound driver... i need to reinstall it...
How in the hell did she manage to remove the sound driver I ask. She replies with:
i htink i accidently removed it yesterday when i was cleaning out my computer
I can't wait to see what else she "accidently" removed.

I hate building computers for family members. They always mess it up and call me asking how to fix it. I feel your pain.

Tell her to use a less abrasive cleanser next time.

HAHAHA!
Sad thing is, I DO know computers. While dinking around with my NIC settings I SOMEHOW completely destroyed it. Simply doesnt work, even when I reinstall the driver. So when I tried to reformat I had lost my CD drives from the machine too. Found out the cables were unplugged (Thats kids...) plugged them in. Couldnt reinstall, kept crashing during OS load. Tried another reboot, PC booted up to the old OS and everything is working fine, minus one built in ethernet port.

Why don't you make her call Dell customer support? Buying a Dell should have absolved you from having to fix her f^ck ups especially since she had the nerve to blame you for the problems to begin with on the box you built. I realize she's family but she shouldn't blame you for things then come begging for help. Let Dell deal with the headache. :)\

Sounds like she could also really use something like GoBack by Roxio.

Dell won't handle the issue because it is XP Pro on there while it was shipped with XP Home.

Shockwave I didn't follow you on this part...you did or didn't reformat? If you didn't reformat, try uninstalling TCP/IP and installing it again and then reinstall your NIC drivers. Unless the kids did something crazy I doubt there really is something wrong with your integrated NIC.

Knowing her she would roll back and lose all of her documents. Thus, once again blaming me.:p

Only downside is I am right here in town. Plus if I refuse to help she calls home, cries to Daddy, and 2 minutes later I receive a phone call from home.

My sister gave my dad a computer and I gave one to my mom. They drive us crazy! I dont know who is worse...

My father calls up to five times at day three to four days a week: I deleted my email, how do I get it back? How to I add something to my fave folder? I ran the spyware software, and it found 837, what do i do now?

My mom THINKS she knows what she is doing: Hey Karen ... remember my autoexec.bat...???

ARRGGHHHH!!!

Any particular reason that such a unknowledgeable user would need XP Pro?
Why not just put it back to stock Dell specs?
