In the first world war, i believe it was, only the front few rows of russian soldiers had rifles. as they died, the soldiers behind would advance and pick them up

did you learn this fact from watching "Enemy at the Gates" with Jude Law? if so it was WW2.

That's pretty much how they have always fought. A common soldier is nothing but cannon fodder to the high command.

The Russians did have severe arms shortages in both WWI and the first half of WWII.

That's pretty much how they have always fought. A common soldier is nothing but cannon fodder to the high command.

You got any other options if you have severe shortage of arms? Put ur arms up to be killed by enemy? Not saying it was the right thing to do, but its possible to pick up weapons for example in counterstrike, if you have only a pistol, and you see your dead teammate you would pick up his colt/ or ak.

It was their best option, but it still sucked for the grunts 🙂

That's the truth. When my grandfather was captured in October 1941 all he had was a WWI rifle with 5 rounds, there was no ammo available. Needless to say, they couldn't fight.
