have any of you guys actually sat down and listened to the ENTIRE albums by Nsync (no strings attached), Britney Spears (her first album one is better), Eminem (marshall mathers lp)....

if you dont like those genres of music thats one thing...but if u do like POP or RAP, those are the best albums out there...and im not just talking about the songs they play on the radio or something...ALL the songs on those albums are really good

Do you have any idea how twisted that sounds?

Show was kind of bad, but that singing dude in the nice blue suit saved the whole evening.

COUNTRY MUSIC RULES!!!!!!

Oh and don`t even get me started on Dolly accompanied by the fat banjo player, because that was just too good to be true.

hmm;)

<<Well I'm sure there's some kind of relationship between The number of albums sold [edit]and[/edit] the quality of music. It might not be a direct relationship, but [edit]it[/edit] sure is one of the [edit]better[/edit].>> (Quotation edited for capitalization, punctuation, grammar, and the useless elipses have been removed as well.)

Ummm, no. Sales have very little relation to quality, if sales were based upon quality the best selling albums every year would be London Symphony Orchestra performances of classical music. The musical preferences of one billion teeny-boppers are worth less to me than the preference of one established music critic. Also, popular music tends to be derivative, while true innovators in the genre, like Steely Dan, are ignored by the public because most people either don't like things that are different or don't take the time to investigate any music outside what other teeny-boppers listen to. The Grammys should go to the innovators, not to the people who blindly follow the popular style in a blatant commercialist attempt to make as much money as possible.

<<Well the grammys should judges from all age groups, and have them evenly divided.>> (Quotation edited in the same manner as above.)

<Sarcasm>Yes, I agree completely. Sixteen year olds obviously have the exact same qualifications and exposure as critics who have spent years in the music industry. Sixteen year olds also clearly are not influenced in the least by a band's appearance and could never be expected to vote for an "artist" simply because an older generation hates the music produced by that "artist". (Eminem, this means you.)</Sarcasm>

In short, leave the critique of music to the critics. They know what they are talking about.

Zenmervolt

EDIT: Missed an error in the first quotation. ("theres" to "there's")

yeah well music is very subjective...
just because u like the orchestra thing, it doesnt mean its the best music...
to someone else Nsync is the best music...

so i think the judges should contain people from every age group...

well i guess i have to accept the way grammys work...i guess thats why they made the MTV music awards

You haven't even heard of Steely Dan, yeah you are a real music expert.

MTV music awards are an insult to all bands with talent. Ugh, they defile the term music.

Heat- I don't think we are in the minority, although perhaps it seems that way. :p

No I haven't listened to them straight through, but I listened to eminem on a trip with a break in between parts of the CD. :)

Yeah, that`s probably why they gave the Best NEW Artist award to someone who had already done 6 albums.:)

Who is ANYONE to judge quality?

Quality is 95% opinion based, and obviously, people with different opinions (yes it actually happens) will have different judgments in quality.

That's why I never care about these award shows. I mean, why would the opinion of the voter's matter more than anyone else's? How did these voters get to be picked? Why are their opinions suddenly more important than everyone else's?

It's the same deal with like, college football. The #1 team is based on a POLL, and are reflected off the opinions of those writers.

It's like, OMG OMG, HE likes my song better than THAT guy, therefore everyone must love me more. There's just no logic in it.

CD sales on the other hand, are concrete examples of what PEOPLE like. I'm definitely NOT saying it's completely indicative of anything, but of raw statistics that are based on and opinions of a few "select" people, the former choice makes a little more sense to me..

I mean, some people may not like the music of 'N Sync/Eminem, but ANYONE that can sell 10 million CD's deserves a world of credit. I personally can't stand Eminem, but do respect him for his success. The goals of these guys were to get their name around right, and a measure of that accomplishment is through the amount of CDs sold.

<<Yeah that new artist thing went to that lady who has been singing for 13 years and has made 6 albums. Good professional critics you have there.>> (Quotation edited as in my previous posts.)

Well, it is all relative. I don't place much trust in critics at all, but I trust them much more than I trust the millions of lemmings buying nouveau-teeny-bopper music because it pisses off their parents or because the "singer" has a surgically altered chest.

"You wouldn't know a diamond if you held one in your hand, the things you think are precious I can't understand." - Steely Dan, 'Reeling in the Years'

EDIT: Heat and Golden Bear, I refuse to give credit to a person or group who sells millions of albums by pandering to the lowest common denominator. Dime store romance novels can sell millions of copies and still be trash, while masterpieces such as Robert Persig's Lila sell poorly because the average person is either incapable of understanding them or would simply rather not take the effort required to digest a book of that caliber. Call it elitism if you like, but being able to sell albums by pandering to the lowest common denominator is nothing worthy of praise.

idiotic teeny boppers or someone who wants to think they are young again, mainly females, are people who buy Nsync et al albums. I albums sold = quality, Vanilla Ice would have swept the Grammy's the year he was popular, he sold 15,000,000 copies of that crappy album, and look where he is. 15million sold != quality.

My biggest problem with the bubblegum pop groups is that they're making music that they themselves wouldn't be caught dead listening to.

Do you really think that when the Backstreet Boys hop into their BMWs they put on an N Sync CD?? Britney Spears? I don't think so. They're listening to hip hop and Radiohead like everyone else.

They're not singing music that comes from their heart. On the contrary, it's music that comes from some song factory in Sweden.

Also, notice how there are no successful boy/girl bands made up of ugly or average-looking people?

i think hes a good artist..he has alot of good songs..

And what parts of his songs do you like? raping your mother or killing your wife? Hummm sounds like hate to me.

I wonder why M&M doesnt pick on the Jews and African-Americans, he only targets women and gays.

And he got a award for writing about rape and murder!!! wow amazing, no its obscene.

Forget about the bad music. I want to know who wrote the bad jokes for the lousiest host I've ever seen. And I thought that nobody could top (or should I say bottom?) Billy Crystal's Oscars lousy nonjokes. Let's find the writer (who also probably writes for Voyager) and execute him/her for crimes against humanity. :|

i think the pop crap didn't win because these are MUSIC awards

nsync/britney/backstreet are marketing pawns first, dancers second, and singers LAST...

Yes nsync and backstreet can harmonize, but if they all looked like Crosby Stills and Nash they'd wouldn't be celebrities...

Why? The music they make isn't challenging or original or substantial... but it's not supposed to be... You don't need to cater to a gourmet's palate when making dog food just like you don't need much talent to satisfy teenage kids...
