That time of year again - new wheels and winter mode

halik

Lifer
It snowed for a bit earlier this week (Chicago), so I'm gonna have to toss on the winter wheels this weekend.

But on the flip side, I found an awesome black set of SSR comps in 17x8/17x9.5 that will be going on in the spring. They're some 15lbs a piece(!!).

Cold asphalt sucks. That is all. :'(

Please tell me you don't drive that through salt.

Meh, I always appreciate real DD's.

Yeah it's not a BMW, but here's my car (somewhere in there) from this past February when the mid-west got hammered.

Will be putting my snow's on before leaving on a little road trip Friday to Minneapolis.

When I have to... though i live downtown chicago, so it will be mostly subway from now on. I do make the Chicago-Detroit trips every so often, but there's a DIY car wash right by my parent's house.

Got front mudflaps on the way and the offset in the back is soo f'd that it's not a problem:

i had to swap out the summers a few weeks ago when it snowed here in nyc/nj

and then my autox club announced one last event for the season - had to sit it out 🙁

I put my winter tires on this last weekend. It was promptly nearly 80 degrees a few days later. I've never done anything but all-seasons before (TN is not known for harsh winters), but the new car necessitates it a bit (the tires I have on it have great grip in the summer, and turn in to hockey pucks in the winter). I miss my summer tires' grip, but as soon as the temps go back down, I'll be glad for it because then they'd have *no* grip. At least with the winter ones I have as much as possible; plus if it snows, I can actually make it to work instead of not making it out of my driveway (this is all theory at this point, but it is my hope).

Put the winters on the gf's Matrix this morning, literally 45 min ago.

Dont need them on my truck its got brand new mud tires which should do ok in the snow.

Put on the winter steelies and tires 2 weeks ago. The car is so smooth on 16" tires compared to the summer 18's, but they suck when taking a curve.

You will want to get those mud tires siped. Muds work great in deep snow but for those times when it's slushy and the roads are just slick it's not fun.

If it gets bad i will Stud them, they are studable from the factory and have holes already in them for the studs. Its not a super big deal anyways if i get stuck as i work for a tow company.

It's not quite cold enough for us yet but I usually change over around Thanksgiving. Current temps are 55/40 so I'll run on summer treads for a few more weeks but snow wheels/tires are ready to be mounted.
I'll be putting on my Volks this coming spring so my current tires are being sacrificed one green light/fishtail at a time. 😀

Here is what the winter combo looks like, please don't mind the gap, it's been resolved.
