That Sapphire Radeon RX 480 Nitro sure seems like a good card.

Nitro has always had some of the best coolers/cards for AMD. I would be curious to know if there are any known issues with this new version. I do know though, as far as all 480s, the BIOSs cannot be modded :C

Sapphire's launch has been so papery.

I've had an order in for the 8GB card from the first hour it was available to preorder on Amazon on the 25th with no signs of shipment. Newegg had a few in stock for a brief moment on the 2nd which I missed and... gah.

Any reason to go Sapphire over Asus, Powercolor, MSI, etc. ?

Generally Sapphire has the best coolers and a variety of them at that. For instance their Tri-X cooler on the R9 Fury might be one of the best air coolers ever made if not the best. It's as quite under load as most cards at idle. They have also been making AMD cards since forever.

Except comparing the reviews I've seen puts the Sapphire RX 480 Nitro as the worst aftermarket RX 480 out there.

Whatever Sapphire did this time around...I don't know.

No, 480 isn't that bad in terms of performance. Sure the 1060 beats it in older games, but in those dx11 launched this year and in dx12 the 480 matches or pulls ahead.

And also no, the NITRO is not a good card. Hot as hell because Sapphire has fucked up pretty seriously with the ridiculous cooler they have put. And as louder as you couldn't imagine because despite their propaganda, their fans are horrible.

MSI, XFX and Asus, while waiting for Gigabyte tests, are solid examples why the NITRO is not the 480 to get.

Could you elaborate more about the sapphire nitro rx 480 ?

It is getting hot of course, because there is a factory overclock setting, if i am not mistaken with the bios switch.
Sapphire overclocked it by default.
So, if i would have such a card, i could lower the clock a bit and undervolt it to reduce power to below 150W again. With wattman this should be possible.
I will be playing at 1080p only, so that would be okay.

I read in the discussion from the interview that this card will not have all 6 vrm phases for the core voltage, but only 5. It seems that during testing, phase number 6 was already disabled.

Clarify a couple of points.. The issue with the fan replacement is due to the new system not yet being fully implemented. The system will allow for the direct fan replacements without shipping cards off.
Concerning the Power Phase, the cards will be 5 phase. While the sample Nathan had was a 6 phase model the card was only using 5 phase during operation, the 6th phase was disabled in BIOS. A few early cards were built with the 6 phase before the switch over in final build.

With respect to the other cards, I am interested in the Gigabyte model, since i have good experience with Gigabyte in general.

The MSI card consumes significantly more power than any other RX480 out there.
