I don't understand why most countries in Africa struggle to build themselves as modern nations. Is it because of corruption? Tribal hostilities? Other countries have faced those before and they are just fine. And it's not like the continent lack resources; it has plenty of oil, gold, diamonds, coal, etc. What is holding the countries back?

Its corruption and cluelessness on how to run a country.

Perfect example is Zimbabwe, once the second most modern country in Africa whos leading export was agriculture and was quite successful. Now you have 80% unemployment and 7000% inflation year to year. Robert Mugabe took a country that was successful and set it back atleast a hundred years.

I know several people from Zimbabwe and most of their families are trying to get out by applying for political asylum in the US. Those who are "well off" and do not support Mugabe aren't exactly safe staying in the country.
