Smug? when I play it's at a local municipal course that's $20/round. Sometimes I'll sneak on after 6:30PM and carry my 50lb bag for 2+ hours...sound smug to you??.

Smug no. Stupid yes.

50 pounds? ROFLMAO! About half that is closer to reality.

It always amazes me that the Hawaiian Islands have such a limited water supply, (only what rainwater they can catch) yet so much of it goes to water golf courses.

Yes, a BUNCH gets used by the various hotels/condos for the benefit of the tourists...but keeping a golf course green takes a metric shit-ton of water...

I'm just waiting for the day that Golf courses are recognized as Superfund sites. In terms of local environmental impact, they are that bad. Sure, I think the game is lame, but it's the courses that are the real abomination in my mind.

Why stupid, is your fat ass too lazy to walk a golf course?, that's how it was done at one time, I used to make a decent dime caddying as a kid now all the fatasses just ride along in a cart..

golf is for pussies.

Said the person who has never played golf. Or the person who has played golf, realized it is freakin hard, and proclaims that "golf is for pussies" because he/she sucks at it.

As to the OP, generating sparks from a golf swing is not all that uncommon. If you play with someone who has a reasonably fast swing speed (greater than about 95 mph), you'll see a spark about 40-50% of the time when they hit the ball with a driver. It'll be a weak flash, but it's a spark nonetheless.

why is it golf players get angry when someone makes the faintest whisper, while real athletes in real sports deal with tens of thousands of fans screaming at the top of their lungs at the most critical points in the game?

golf is for pussies.

OK, rather than spew a bunch of crap I'll try to explain, you have to swing very accurately to strike a golf ball so it flies (hopefully) where you want it to, even 1/4-1/2 inch off and you "chunk" it (take a huge divot and the ball goes 20 yds.) or you "skull" it (ball travels on ground, a worm-burner) or even 5 degrees left or right off at impact and it winds up 20-40 yards off line. It takes a lot of concentration to hit a decent shot, that's why spectators and fellow golfers don't yell and scream during a swing, what kind of game would it be if it became a contest of who is best at distracting the other player?. One more thing, If I took you to the range and gave you a few tips to get started and you hit one, just one nice driver shot you would be hooked, trust me!..

Oh! They need silence because it is difficult. Now I see. It's only sports where the tasks are super easy and require no concentration or focus, like trying to hit a 95 mph fastball on baseball, that crowd noise is acceptable. Thanks for clearing that up!

Haha so true- my dad hates golf but last time I was back home I dragged him to play- he hit a 5 wood to a 170yr par 3 over water *right* at the pin - ended up 10 feet short, he 3 putted- but that one shot got him hooked.

No, your right, hitting a fastball IS difficult but it's timing and eye-hand coordination whereas in golf it's EXACT muscle memory so it's different and it's considered a gentleman's game, why degrade it?, what would be the point of people bringing compressed air-horns to a tournament, to create the "biggest jackass spectator" contest??.

My golfing buddies call me "sparky". I'm not fibbing here, many times sparks can be seen when my driver hits the ball but normally can only see them if it's really cloudy or dusk.

I think it's the tee scraping something because I'm not hitting the ground or anything.

Maybe Les and Bear should carry a golf club with them...

As I have played baseball at a very high level, I can tell you that crowd noise is not nearly as big a factor in hitting a baseball as it is in hitting a golf ball. As Butch explained, its all about margin of error. If a ballplayer swings a fraction of a second early or late, he might hit the ball to right field, to left field, or foul. Unlike golf, however, the player isn't "penalized" per se by the direction of the ball flight after contact. If he hits it foul, he gets anothe shot (unless the ball is caught in foul territory, of course).

Moreover, a small miss right or left won't impact most hits in baseball, because the ball is not in flight long enough in most cases to significantly deviate from its trajectory.

Further, a baseball is significantly heavier and spins much more slowly than a golf ball in flight. Which means that a miss-hit golf ball will deviate from a straight path much more significantly than a baseball that was mishit the same way and travels the same distance.

Not that hitting a 95 MPh fastball isn't hard. I know first hand that it is (and I was a fairly solid hitter). But the difficulty in hitting a baseball lies significantly more in reaction time, whereas the difficulty in golf lies almost exclusively with the quality of contact.

It's a "gentleman's game" simply because the "undesireables" weren't allowed to join clubs for so many years.

"Gentlemen" only, please.

I understand the skill and everything, but let's not sugarcoat the actual history of the game.

This is why I avoid muni courses and only play at expensive ones. It's keeps the lower class people away and the players respect the course, the etiquette of the game, repair their ball marks, fix divots, etc.

Your seeing the "money" part of golf where indeed rich folk join exclusive clubs and hobknob with other rich folk but I'm telling you, it exists on another level too, it's played by common, blue class folk (like myself) that find it fun and challenging, I've never joined a club nor do I ever anticipate being able to afford to do so and really, I don't give a shit, I play because I like to. I can't see where sneaking onto the local muni after 7:00PM and practicing lobbing 8 irons is gonna move me up ANY social ladder whatsoever. And by "gentlemen" I was referring to one's conduct on the course not one's social status..

I respect any course I play on and rarely play an expensive one. Sure a lot of first timers play the cheapest course available but some (like myself) conduct myself the same way on any course because any course is to me a treasure. Believe it or not one can be modest and still have some class and dignity..
