That awkward moment when you run into your old SVP of Engineeering

Sitting at a local Gyro joint right by my new job with my gf, and in walks my old Senior VP of Engineering (three levels above my old boss) and we talk for a good 15-20 minutes.

We both got fired under almost the exact same circumstances. One of those irony is a bitch kind of days.

He had 28 years in the company... I had 6... but we both got screwed by HR in the end, despite the fact we are both doing better afterwards.

Added him on FB, had a beer when I got home... and life is good.

... and HR can suck my ____

I live off of Gyros. Wouldn't have ran into him otherwise. LOL

Gyros, and any Irish food. The Irish food I get because I'm half -- the Gyros, I have no idea.

But I almost cried when I saw him. You have to know an old school cable guy, to understand.

Otherwise you'll just think I'm weird.

I love when people say they got "screwed by HR." That usually means they f'd themselves in the end. HR is bound by policy and practice in most companies.

What the hell did you both do to get fired?

Sexual harassment? Looking at porn at working? Beating a coworker up? Those are the only things I can think of HR really caring about.

Why was it awkward? You two get fired for some bathroom playtime or something?

wait....

you can't get fired for that right?....

I mean, they can't have cameras in bathrooms...

right?...

How would they know?...

I'm asking for a friend, of course

How can you get screwed by HR?

It's quite easy. For example, in my wife's case she was having issues with her boss, after attempting to address them with said boss and failing, she went to HR. After going to HR the boss attempted to retaliate, so she went to HR again. The boss then retaliated again and had my wife fired. It was clearly retaliation given the history, but HR didn't give my wife a chance to respond to the unsubstantiated allegations before they escorted her out. When we took the issue up with the proper state employment agency and presented the history and evidence, the administrative law judge all but called the HR people incompetent or corrupt.

Not playing well with others is a quick way to canned. Going to HR about it is risky business.
I feel I was let go (read: lay-off) due to an issue with myself and an older "gentleman" colleague. It was known this guy just didn't like me and I did not know why. I tried putting my best foot forward and dismissed his rants/insults.
When my review came up, it was noted that I scored "unsatisfactory" in the area of "Getting along with others". I am a fairly easy going guy, and my supervisor knows that this older fella tends to ride the younger guys rather harshly. I took a gamble and mentioned that I had exhausted all of my options to better our working relationship. Well, of course it was noted and both my supervisor and I agreed to let HR handle this, but continue to work on things from our end.

Fast forward 2 months later and I was caught in the lay-off. When asked why me specifically the HR troll basically said I was chosen because of the rocky relationship I had with a "senior office member".
So, had I not acknowledged the fact that he and I didn't get along and not protest that point, I firmly feel I would still be working there.

Glad I am not though. Their competition picked me up and I didn't have a non-compete.
Pay back is a bitch!!

lol, i've never met the VP of anything, let alone had an awkward moment with them. guess it must be one of those job specific type things.

That my be true, but that wasn't this scenario. Not only were the boss' original actions illegal (harassment et al) but of a team of ten people, nine of them were fired by or quit because of this person in a few months' span. My wife was the last to go, and then after we took her employer to the woodshed with the state authorities the boss was gone shortly after.

It all could have been avoided by competent HR work.

You have to remember that HR exists solely for the purpose of protecting the company from *you*. There is no "human" in human resources.

Don't blame HR, blame the big wigs making the calls, HR just does what they are told to do.
