Note: I'm not asking if I was honest (I know I wasn't), I'm asking if it was wrong of me to do.

On Black Friday I purchased one of Staples' High-Back Leather Manager's Chairs for $39.99 (Reg. 129.99) and of course they were out of them. I then placed my order and I assumed they were going to ship it to my house as they did the year before when they were out of the item that I ordered. Well I go in about a week and half later because I couldn't find my receipt and I was freaking out... ended up the Manager gave me a chair with my receipt and said thank you. I left, done deal, or so I thought.

Um...about a week later I get a phone call during the early part of the week from Staples letting me know that my chair had arrived at the store and it was ready to be picked up, I just said OK, I'll be in shortly. Well what do you know, I bullshitted, of course... the weekend rolls around and I never picked it up and they called me again Sunday to remind me again and I AGAIN bullshitted around and never went. So I ended up going last night, presented my receipt, asked for my chair and they gave it to me, no questions asked. I even dealt with the same manager and the same girl in the Customer Service line.

THANKS STAPLES!! SUCKERS!!

P.S. My roomate decided to buy the chair from me for what I paid for it to give to his father for Christmas!

Yes. I think you knew that though. Why are you asking this here?

Personally I see it like this - it was their wrong-doing and bad recordkeeping, not mine.

And I'm asking to see how others felt about the situation.

And I'm sure you've never got something for free in your life that you weren't supposed to? C'mon now...

Well that's one way to look at it, but it's a completely wrong way to look at it.

Dishonest=wrong. Duh :roll:

Did you at any point tell Staples that you had already picked up your chair? I can't believe you stole from Staples even after the manager was nice enough to give you a chair without a receipt.

You suck.

Oh, basically fraud? Yeah, you can post about that kind of stuff on ATOT. You just can't post about how you worked your butt off and became successful the honest way and got a $35k bonus. That's kind of looked down upon in ATOT

That's a very creative way to rationalize your dishonesty. But I guess that's how dishonest people live with themselves - coming up with ways to blame their behavior on someone else.

No, I don't suck.

And to clear that up, I went in and stood in line in Customer Service and told them I had lost my receipt and wondered if they could look up my order and print me a new one. Well I had to wait a while so the manager could get some time to do it, easily 45 mins... and finally he went to the back and looked up my order and printed me a new receipt and told me that he thinks they received them today and if I wanted to ahead take one, I could and I did.

I admitted it was dishonest. Re-read first line in original post.

So, because you had to wait 45 min. you feel it's justified to commit fraud?

How is what you did different from shoplifting?

Yes, you took adantage of their customer service to get a free chair. Just because they messed up and allowed you to take it doesn't mean they forfeited their rights to it.

Thats all fine & good, but when they called you later, you should have said I already recieved the chair, but you choose to steal instead. Again, what do you want from us, to applaud your thieving skills?

I don't understand. You know you stole something. You know you got away with something. Is it that you want others to pat you on your back, and that you're not a common thief? Then here ya go. You deserve it. Blah blah blah.

No way. I'm in no way trying to justify what I did. But I HAVE to stand up for what I did because I did it. I'm not trying to flip-flop here.

Spunky,
If they would've never called to remind me (which they shouldn't have) the first time, I would've never thought about it again. Hell, if they would've never called a second time to remind me again I wouldn't have thought about it again, either. It wasn't that big of a deal to go get that chair because even after the second call I still waited another 2 days before actually getting in there.

I've had that happen before with other items. I always just say "I already picked it up" and let it go at that. No need to scam the store for a free item when you don't need it...

admitting that you did something dumb/wrong/regrettable isn't a bad thing.
