Referring to an Epox 9NPA+ULTRA (pictured here).

If the PS has a 24-pin connector, is the little 2x2 power connector also necessary? The manual was unclear on this. I was under the impression the 2x2 was necessary with older 20-pin connectors.

If you are refering to the 4pin 12v atx connector(2 yellow and 2 black wires) Yes, you still need to plug that one in.

Yes, you need to connect both of them. The 24pin and the 2x2 connector.

Whew. I built a machine for a co-worker yesterday and just realized I did not plug that 2x2 into the board. But the machine booted fine and functioned for nearly 24 hours. I just called her and told her to turn off the machine ASAP until I can look at it again.

Talk about a rookie mistake but I thought the 2x2 was only necessary for 20-pin PS connectors.

As a rule of thumb, I would plug in all of the power connectors possible to your motherboard.

The ULTRA-D has four connections for example!

Any chance the board was damaged in those 24 hours?

Highly unlikely it would damage anything, but would likely eventualy cause instablity.

I had a MSI K7t turbo2 mobo that had a 4 pin 12v connector. I never used and never had a problem as far as I can tell for 3 years I had it.
