why spend a fortune?...most of the stuff people recommend is bullshlt..

i've built a couple systems using a thermaltake volcano III ($12 CDN) and it's literally almost DEAD silent, including a generic PSU fan running.

another good one is the thermalright CB-6L, which i've also used, but it's not as cheap, nor as quiet..close tho. (and cools better)...

for anythign under 1.4 GHz, the volcano III is one of the quietest/cheapest solutions...plus it uses the same sink as the volcano 5..just slap on a better 60mm in the future if u want better cooling..the fans run at ~4000rpm.
 
Before spending $$$ on a 8045 (great product though), you can try to see how far you can get with your current HS.

Build yourself a fan adapter (cardboard) and get a slow rpm 80mm fan of similar cfm rating than what you got.







 
Use any heatsink you want - it's the fan that creates the noise. Generally the smaller the fan the more noisy it will be, but not always. Just chose a fan with low dba. Something like 30 or less.
 
I just looked at Directron (http://www.directron.com/socketafan.html) and found four Duron HSF's for under $10 that have a sound rating of 32db or less. They are Coolermaster DP5-5G11A, Spreeze Socket A, Chrom Orb and the Volcano II. I am currently runnin a Coolermaster DP5-6I11A (36.5db) in one of my systems and that is fairly quiet.
 
Hey Snowpunk: I've been using CoolMaster EP5-6I11 HS/F in my builds lately for friends. It's AMD approved also, I'm not saying it's the quietest HS/F avaliable, but it's the quietest one I've come across in a long time - you can get them over at Newegg for $8.00 or $9.00 bucks.

I recommend the Millenium Glaciator II. While technically not the quietest, it is very quiet and performs nearly as well as the Alpha PAL8045U (the one with a delta screamer on it)!
