Thanks Citibank, you (may have) saved my a$$

I'm not sure what happened, but apparently some store's database got compromised and a bunch of card #s were stolen. I wasn't even aware of it until today when a new card came in the mail, saying that for security reasons I had to be issued a new card and the old card needs to be cancelled. I checked my account and no odd charges were made, but all charges I made for the past few weeks were paid off by the company without my knowledge just in case.

This is the 2nd time in the last few months they've one-upped my expectations. THAT'S how you keep a customer, good show Citibank. I'll be sticking with you guys for a while.

edit to clarify: I didn't mean all of mine were paid off permanently. I figured it was just their precaution to 'pay off' everything temporarily so I don't go over my credit limit from faulty charges.

I just got a message today from citi that my account was possibly compromised as well and that a new card was on the way.

I didn't get the impression from the message that my balance for the past few weeks was paid off by them though... are you sure about that part? If so, why oh why didn't I buy a new projector last week? 😉

EDIT:

"Important Security Message
This is to inform you that your account may be at risk for unauthorized use. To ensure that it remains protected, we have:
#
Restricted Account Online access for this account number.
#
Issued a new Citi Card to you.

When you receive your new card, please take the following steps immediately:
1. Activate it as instructed on the sticker on the front of the card.
2. Inform authorized users of this situation.
3. Notify recurring billing merchants of the new account number.
4. Register your new account number with Account Online for full access again

In the meantime, to make payments online, change account information or use the Secure Message feature, call Customer Service at 1-800-950-5114. "

In my account details, it says that my current balance is $0, but my available credit shows the amount that it should assuming I have made all the purchases for this billing period.

It's probably in reference to this announcement a couple of weeks ago.

Heartland Breach

We've re-issued over 5,000 debit cards thus far due to this breach. We learn of additional cards every week and we've been re-issuing approxmimately 1,000 per week.

I had the same thing happen.

To clarify the paid-balance thing, I think that's incorrect. My old (possibly stolen/ whatever) card showed "payments" to the balance I had accrued since last statement. But my new card came already, so I activated that, which closed my old account. When I looked at my new card info in Account Online, it shows the balance that was "paid" (really just transferred) from the old card.

So no one's really getting free stuff 😛

The first notice I got of it was on Friday, when my new card came. But also, when I logged into Account Online it showed the (old) card as possibly stolen.

So, if you log into Account Online now and it looks normal, I think you're fine.

They didn't credit you anything.

All of that money that would have been owed on your original account number is now owed to the new account number. You owe the same amount and all charges were transferred to new account.

Thanks for the clarification, and I didn't mean to imply I was getting free stuff. I figured it was just their precaution to 'pay off' everything temporarily so I don't go over my credit limit from faulty charges.

Yup same thing happened to me, however, I check my account on a daily basis and I was notified online that my account was compromised. I called them up asking wtf was up with my account and they replied one of the vendors/merchants databases got hacked into and a lot of information was stolen and as a precaution they sent me a new card. In fact, it just came in the mail today. Thumbs up to Citi!
