I liked this company's mission statement & values 15 yrs ago & boy am I glad I did!

I am one of those folks who don't know how sick they are till they are almost dying. Fatigue from cancer treatment was killing me. The powers that be stepped forward & put together an ADA accommodation for me that has me doing important cool work but, it also isn't as physically taxing. I have energy after work & can participate in my life.

Oh & 2018 insurance rates announced, policy prices stay the same, 1OK is a lot of money but I am grateful to still be getting expert cancer care.

Trying to avoid Twitter these days.. it is an upsetting place too much of the time, screw cancer & those who think I deserve to die in agony!

Thank you for checking in and giving us an update. It's good to hear you're still going to get the care that you need and that you'll see your son graduate. Best wishes to you.

I am trying very hard to walk this cancer trip one sneaker & one day at a time. In the end though while I am still here I need to take some pleasure out of my life & I am doing just that'

I started following your story about the same time my mother was diagnosed with cancer. She was diagnosed November of 2014 and we lost her May the next year. Seeing your posts, progress and strength through it actually gave me some sort of comfort. My mother hid that she was stage 4 from us until the last couple weeks.

Stay strong and thank you for helping me along the way.

I can certainly identify with you as I was recently diagnosed with cancer myself. First, let me say I wish you the best. Second, just to let you know, I spend about $8-10,000 a year on hardware and about $5000 a year on electricity for the farm to help Stanford and Berkley in their cancer research DC projects. I am number 34 in the world in contribution for Folding@home.

I am so sorry for your loss :(

As to your Mom hiding her stage... all mothers want to protect their children no matter how old they might be. She probably wanted to spare & shield you as much as she could from this painful reality :(

Cancer sucks, sorry you had to join this club :(

As you know, many patients jump from one trial drug to the next, every month I live new trials are starting. Research can mean curing some cancers & turning others into chronic illness that can be managed.

Thank you for your massive help with the folding to assist cancer research, may your efforts help them make many discoveries! . Your contribution makes you number one in my book!

This is his last semester, if he passes his finals he'll be a college graduate! He will walk with his class next May & I will live to see him do it!

Oh I know. Still makes you so conflicted. Could I have spent more time had I known? Was I as prepared as I sound have been. And then I remember why she kept it from us. My stepfather resented us as he thought we knew all along.

That's why I keep following your progress. I get that sense of inclusion that I missed. For better or for worse as far as the feelings go. So thank you for sharing it with all of us. You're a strong and admirable woman.

I didn't know your mom but I can tell you about my feelings. Terror, anxiety that is crippling, fear with every treatment, every scan, the roller coaster ride, one month things look okay, the next month things look dire. Your mom might have wanted to spare you that, she might also have been so afraid that she feared talking about it would cause her to have a total mental breakdown. It could be a combination of these things or none of them. She might also have held onto some misguided notion that she somehow "deserved" her cancer.

All I know is that for me, talking about it makes things better. My more morbid worries I tend to share only with my Pallative Care team because they get it & won't worry like family does.

Hugs to you, big huge motherly type hugs. Just know your mom loved you & wanted to try to shield you from some of this.

Well thank you and a big giant supportive hug right back. Feeling a little emotional so lost on words. But thank you. I can't express enough how valuable just being able to share in your progress has been.

Your mother passed, of course you are emotional! Never be ashamed of that! Also know, every time you think of her or speak of her, she will always live on in your heart

In more developed nation no one thanks the company since this would be a legal requirement.

In the US, it depends on the good will pay-offs and whether it can be justified economically but it's never to be nice to you, only the profits matter.

I know that is true because I've learned from "the best".

I wish you all the best and hope that you recover just fine.

I have a personal history with cancer, it's an ugly disease that needs to be stopped and probably could have been stopped already if it was more profitable.

I wish all of humanity could put their heads together and assassinate cancer once and for all. Such a vile disease. The treatments for it are pretty vile as well.

To the OP, I wish you all the best, I know it's not an easy thing.

We could have, if there was enough profits in it.

Scraps to cancer research compared to erectile dysfunction until Viagra came along, now it's mostly research into things that are very curable by just losing weight or ingesting less sodium.

But hey, the billionaires need more money, the millionaires need more too so fuck the cancer patients, they can buy insurance and deal with the treatment they can get which will cost them millions over the years.

I thank my company not because they complied with the law ( ADA is law here) but because they saw how I tired I was looking & they went and put together an ADA without me needing to formally ask for it! We did the Doctor paperwork, I met with HR but none of these things were horrible, in fact the dude in HR was wonderful, they told me outright what a valued employee I am!

The company lives by its mission statement & public core values, not just for consumers but also for their workers. I have lost track of the number of kindnesses that have been extended to me. I have been sick a long time & they have been good to me. They walk their talk & I am proud to be in their service.

SHUT UP.
Dont respond to me with your whinging. What I said had nothing to do with you or whining idiots like you, I was talking to the OP.

Get off your ass and cure cancer yourself. No billionaire is stopping you, you whiny twit. Guarandamnedtee'd you haven't given jack shit to cancer research compared to the people you're whining at. 'Til then, go stuff yourself.

You're lucky as there aren't many organizations that operate like that in today's world. I'm glad that you're with one of the remaining good ones. :)

Yeah... surely they don't care about profit, only about their customers and workers.

I'm sorry but I've been involved in research and development for 20+ years and I can tell you that there is no company that gives a flying fuck about you unless it's for their own good.

Also, there is no one in any higher up position in any company that wants anyone with cancer to get well. They want you to require treatment forever.

Look, I'm really glad that everything has worked out for you but I'm very sceptical of your newfound appreciation for corporate America.

Every day that I wake up, get to go to work, care for my pets is a good day. Every weekend I get to go out, food shop, go out to lunch or see a movie is a day Cancer didn't win! This weekend was a trifecta, I saw Fall foliage in NH, made a glutton of myself at breakfast, food shopped & cared for my cats :)

Since I've been warned three times, I will not respond to this post more than to say that I'm a molecular biologist who works for Astra Zeneca, I literally research and develop the new stuff for cancer treatment and I KNOW that there could have been a much simpler solution if we wanted that to happen.

We develop drugs that most patients take for the rest of their lives, each patient is worth about £1000 000 for us, one cured patient is worth absolutely jack shit.

You do the math.

Anyway, I'm sorry to yell at someone in this thread, this isn't the place for it. I get sick of moronic statements trying to act like this is just another US vs THEM issue. Plenty of wealthy people, middle class people, poor people whatever people give money to cancer research and *everyone* has a stake in finding cures. It doesn't matter how much money someone has- they can die from cancer same as anyone else. It's not just another thing to assign to stupid political party bullshit and then whinge at people over.

All of us have seen good people die of cancer through no fault of their own, and all of us despise the illness.

I liked this company when I first interviewed with them 15 years ago. Their focus was on meeting consumer needs as pleasantly & efficiently as possible. Part of that mission meant that employees needed to treat each other respectfully, in other words, if your baseline attitude is to be a jerk, you probably won't like it here.

I've tried to always be nice to others, I obviously don't hangout with everyone I come in contact with but I go out of my way to make their day a bit nice, causing misery isn't my thing lol! :)
