I'm still high from my meeting with the boss & share holders for our little company.

My presentation was the most successful one since I have been working for my current employer. After 7 months here I have converted a few users to use OpenOffice as a supplement to Office 97. I now have given the decision makers a choice other than MS. If they goes with my Linux proposal we will save over 100k in software upgrade ++ yearly licenses schedule in a year from now. We will save money on not to upgrade to WinXP server, Office apps, and PDF writers. The last glue that might make us a 90% Linux shop is Rdesktop & Terminal Server Client (released Oct 23 2002); it allow us to us RDP to connect to MS-Greatplains Dynamics & MS-SQL server.

I hope one day soon that Linux have a database just as powerful as MS-SQL & GreatPains CRM so I could propose to move the rest of our business onto a 100% Linux solution so we wouldn't have to paid to suck on the MS tax nipple at 18% of the total cost per year.

Thank you Linux developers & users that make this world a little freer from MS.

End rant.

Ever hear of this little company called oracle?
Do you always find tiny, technical flaws in people's statements and ignore the context?

Obviously, he's referring to low-cost, open-source software and not expensive proprietary software.

If it wasn't for people like lowtech, clueless PHBs would always choose MS software based on the latest flashy, colorful MSN ad on TV.

That is really awesome. I'm a big MS user right now, but I would LOVE to have all those Linux options available to me. It just seems like a WHOLE LOT of learning, and I don't know when I'm gonna have the time to do all that.

But that is really cool.

Oracle makes ya pay through the b@ll$ when it comes to licensing....just as bad as M$. Good product though, I worked with it for a few years.
but only if you can afford it.

Have you looked at PostgreSQL? It's supposed to closer in functionality to Oracle...don't know if it can do stuff like storing procedures, etc.

I'm so happy using MySQL/PHP/Apache right now....saved my employer lots of $$$$....no reward except an "attaboy"... :(

My current employer shop were a Mac shop 3 years ogo, but they converted to Windows due to database support. It is a hard task to sell Linux/OpenOffice to the hard core business people...why such a good product is free & why it have such a small market share compare to MS.

My last job was at a Linux shop that support DB2 & Oracle, and MS-SQL is inexpensive comepare to Oracle/DB2. Under Linux, I have a little experience with MySQL, and have looked at PostgreSQL & Firebird, but they don't provide what my company need.

It is extreamly difficult to convince the suits that customize financial/sales/crm apps can be as good or better than the pre package. They are afaird that they can be held hostage by us tech due to customization, and where/who could they get support if us tech leave the company. By going with pre package product from company such as MS will give them a sense of security that they will always can get support......but at what cost befor they relizes there are other ways for doing business.

It's absolutly great... (i created an instance of it)
anyways...congratulation lowtech..
this is a real achievemnt...
I wish i was as convincing as you are (i wouldn't have to be sitting in front of windows 2K right now and cry all day until I get to my linux box at home)

cheers
