Hi guys,

I've built a few computers in the past. I have done quite a bit of research online and in these forums. I have also read the pc building sticky at the top of this forum. The main purpose for the rig that I'm building is: a video editing machine, that will be future proof for at least 4 years within a $600 budget. Could you guys provide me with some feedback on the components below?

Mobo:
ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI MCP ATX AMD

CPU:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Windsor 3.0GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket AM2 125W Dual-Core

RAM:
G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory

HDD:
Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS 640GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM

GPU:
ASUS EAH3450/HTP/256M Radeon HD 3450 256MB 64-bit GDDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card

Case:
Antec Three Hundred Black ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail

PSU:
Antec earthwatts EA500 500W ATX12V v2.0 Power Supply 100 - 240 V UL, CUL, FCC, TUV, CE, CB, C-tick, CCC - Retail

Thanks,
Pitu

Do any of you guys have these parts? What do you think of them? My main concern is the motherboard. I want it to be as future proof as possible.
What do you guys think about the power supply?

Future proofing is a bit of a silly concept anyway, but it certainly can't be done on $600.

Also, if you're going to be spending $250 on CPU and motherboard Intel is probably a better bet.

If you want it to be "future proof" for 4 years, you may want to consider spending more money on a quad core CPU, as video editing (especially in the future) will favour multi-core CPUs more. The downside is that quad cores are quite expensive (unless you go with AMD).

Also with that setup, you don't need 500W. This PSU should do fine: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16817371005

Thanks for the input and link Unknown Person. The reason why I chose a 500W PSU is in case in the future a few more pci cards, hard drives or video cards are added.

I know that the Intel line of quad cores is better than AMD, but I'm an AMD fanboy. All my previous systems have been AMD except for my laptop.

DSF thanks for your input. What would you choose on the intel side ?

Well, if you're not overclocking you could pair a P43 chipset motherboard with an E8400 for much better performance at about the same price. If you are overclocking, pair an E7200 with a P35 or P45 based motherboard. Again, similar price, superior performance compared to the AMD system.

If you're going to buy a new operating system why wouldn't you get a 64-bit one?

No reason to purchase an older nVidia chipset - especially an SLI ...

Combo Deal from the Egg: $260 (after shipping and rebate)

BIOSTAR TFORCE TA780G M2+ AMD 780G mATX

AMD Phenom 9600 Agena 2.3GHz AM2+ 95W

Antec NSK4480B Black ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 380W Power Supply

Don't need the Radeon HD3450 unless you wish to go hybrid CrossFire. Looking good with the Phenom 9600BE if your video editing software can run four parallel threads across those cores ...

As an alternative on the last page of the combo deals there is a Foxconn 790gx / Phenom 9600BE with a slight discount.

$600 budget != future proofing
AMD socket AM2 != future proofing
😕

I'm with DSF's suggestions, go for the quintessential Core 2 system, and slap Vista x64 on it, if you want to 'future-proof'.
