As you may or may not know, or care... my house has been hit by floodwaters in the midwest.

I am doing a semi PSA/thank you to everybody who helped clean up the 9 feet of water in our basement and helped pull the flooring on our main floor. The food that has been donated to us is godsend and we can concentrate on cleaning rather than cooking.

To give a summary of what happened to us, within 30 minutes on June 7th, 2008, our house was hit by flood waters from all the creeks in town. Since they are creeks they rise quick but go down quick. So within 24 hours we came back to the house to start the clean up for the water had gone down.

I was able to save most the items downstairs, especially perishable ones and electronics, but it was not enough time within that half hour to save everything.

Red Cross helped us out first by giving us several hundred dollars so we could replace the beds, lost clothes, and food. FEMA came within the next week and we got several thousands of dollars to replace our furnace, flooring, drywall, and electrical systems. It might not cover it all but it helps!

Lastly, from Mormons to Lutherans, to random acts of kindness from friends/family, we have been able to clean up just about everything in the past three weeks and are in purchase mode to start moving back in.

Luckily we only got 1 inch of water on the main floor but our neighbors had several feet. There are many houses in town that are condemned or deemed unsafe to walk upon so we are so lucky compared to neighboring streets.

So to sum this up, thanks for everything and the next time I see Red Cross I will donate at least $5 bucks.

You do realize that Hurrican Katrina hit more than just downtown New Orleans, right? It left a trail of destruction covering hundreds of square miles, including a boatload of predominantly white people in the Southern Mississipi area. The FEMA and Red Cross response for them was no better and no worse than it was for those in downtown New Orleans.

Yet here we are 3 years later and the people most loudly complaining are the people who lived in metro New Orleans, still wanting their handouts while re-electing the mayor who decided not to evacuate the city in the first place.

Yes I do, but if you look at the majority of Red Cross/FEMA workers they were either older retired whites, blacks, gays, or a mixture of the above. It seemed that the majority of FEMA workers were in fact minorities.


As for the people that came to help our ASIAN family, it was 75% white, 25% black.

The only color I hated during this whole ordeal was the brown water that rose in our town.
