I don't know about Canada, but in the US I can't imagine these being "very serious" charges. I don't see what this guy did as any kind of attempted murder (I think it falls more into the category of what the law calls "mere preparation"), and so in all probability he will be out on the streets fairly soon. Hopefully they do a decent job of keeping an eye on him.

He's mentally ill (or at least acts it!) so he'll be put in an institution for that, not simply in jail for weapons charges.
