Good news all around. Now they only have to get them out of the flooded areas... At least they can get them some food and clean water.

From what I've heard it might be a bit before they can get them out.

Was on the news last night....they went 10 days without food...have to be careful how much they get fed now or they will get sick. They may have to stay in the caves for months until they can find a way out since another flash flood is coming.

This is both good and bad. Good they got found, but bad that it will likely be almost Christmas before they get out for good.

why the hell were they in a cave?

From what I've read it's a cave that they've explored in the past. The problem was the rain forced them deeper into the cave until they were trapped.

I've lived in Thailand for some time, and the monsoon season is crazy! It rains during this time for hours with no end in sight. Sigh.. I miss Thailand and it's people. :(

Hope those boys get out.

this is probably the worst news story I've read in years. My prayers are going out to those young men :(

They were talking about possibly have them swim out with gear. Problem being narrow passages, so they'd be alone at some points. I wonder if they could make a sealed capsule, and tow them out one at a time? As long as the passages don't bend too much, I'd think that would work.

They are alive. They are getting supplies and medical attention. There are tons of people working on rescue plans as we type and worst case scenario they have to wait it out while remaining well supplied, which would suck since it would be like 4 months, but from everything I've read they will live.

Sooo.. this isn't going to end well.

Apparently oxygen is running low so they are considering having the group scuba dive out with a Thai SEAL alongside. It's like a 5+ hour dive in basically the dark, and apparently some of them can't swim.

The biggest, and probably the hardest, is teaching them how not to panic. They can probably just be dragged by the divers and as long as they don't panic it will go as well as possible. The problem is that even experienced divers panic and panic is what truly kills. How do you teach a bunch of kids not to panic in conditions that 90%+of people would panic in a week or two?

I sure as hell hope they can pull it off and have people smarter than me working on the problems.

they went 10 days without food

On a tangent, I watched a good documentary recently about fasting. One of the fasting centers said that they typically do a one to two week water fast (no food, only water) for patients, and that you can survive for up to 40 days without food, as long as you have access to water.

10 days is no joke tho. Poor kids :( Hope the rescue efforts go well...

If they have them accurately located they could drill a shaft ala Chilean miner rescue of a few years ago.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Copiapó_mining_accident

the mine was well studied geologically speaking so they knew exactly what they needed to do (plus they had drilling equipment and infrastructure on site)

this place is remote with no infrastructure and they have no idea what the underlying geology is like

Because they were miraculously found alive? o_O

because we're going to watch them suffocate to death

as mentioned, this is not going to end well, and we get to watch this slow-motion catastrophe knowing there's nothing we can do about it

a former Thai Navy SEAL-equivalent just died doing this run

if it's too much for a SEAL, what chance do kids have?

rhetorical question, trying to bring them out would be irresponsible and just result in even more people getting killed

That's how they rescue injured people in that situation. Its basically a body bag with an oxygen supply. They are really hard to manoeuvre through a winding cave system though.

Or possibly a diver's bell. The time issue is that the cave cold get flooded within a day, not only killing the kids but likely also killing many of the rescuers. 5 hours of oxygen from a tank is really streching it, they are already at the limits of their equipment and worsening conditions might mean the thai authorities would have to pull out some personnell.

EDIT
apparently 5h is something i completely made up, most tanks will last 1 hour. As i understand they have a 5h trek which possibly means some areas require diving and some dont. The diver that did die, died because his tank ran out.
The point is, its dangerous NOW for everyone involved; if things get worse, they risk everyone getting killed, divers included.

Air supply isn't a massive problem I'd have thought, they can run a line in if they need to, it's the rising water level that's terrifying. Plus the whole stuck in a dark cave with no food or means of escape thing.
