Just recently I bought a new computer. For the monitor I got a 17 inch Elements Plasmar 7J TFT display. Apparently the response time for my display is 25 ms. My question is, is this good enough for games or will I really notice blurring in some games? In the games I have played so far, Delta Force Black Hawk Down Demo, Warcraft 3 Demo and America's Army I don't notice any blurring except in America's Army when I rotate the view quickly when I am next to walls I notice a little blurring. Are there other games where the blurring would be more pronounced though?

Normally the quoted response time is full power black to white, which is not really a very good indicator of performance.
In my experience, 25ms quoted response time is not blur-free for a high frame-rate First Person Shooter. Try UT2003 for a few minutes.

I just tried UT 2003 and it was great. Didn't notice much blurring at all. How could this be if what you said is true?
I don't have an LCD yet, but am thinking about getting one. So I have been reading a lot of peoples opinions on them. Usually most people seem to be pretty happy with UT2003. One of the games most people seem to have a lot of ghosting issues with is CounterStrike.
What frame rates were you pulling?
I'm fairly sensitive to blurring, so *any* blurring at all really sticks out for me.

Andy forgot to tell you....if your only pulling 5 to 10 fps, TFT displays are great because you won't notice any blurring @ all...
I don't know how to bring up the FPS but it had to be at least 50 FPS. I was doing 80+ in America's Army.
45 ms = (1000/45) fps = 22.2 fps
25 ms = 1000/25 = 40 fps
I want 50+ fps, so I would get an LCD with (1000/50) ms = 20 ms response time.

Ghosting is all the eyes of the beholder... for some people the Samsungs (171ts, I believe) that everyone got off Dell for cheap blurred too much, and others never noticed it.
Yea seriously. Most people in most applications will never be able to tell. The bigger issue IMO is native resolutions and interpolation. Most new 17" LCD's have a respectable ms response time that will not be very evident in most application or game situations. Most of the times you will only see it when you scan real fast in a very high contrast situation.
CallTheFBI: If you really have to look this hard for ghosting/tracing issues, then it doesn't look like you have much to worry about. Enjoy your LCD.
Thanks I will. I am never going to buy another CRT again. And 40 frames per second is just fine for me, I don't think I could tell the difference between 40 FPS and a million FPS. But I would like to see games played on a lower quality LCD so I could see vividly what people are talking about because right now I'm not even sure if what I am seeing is ghosting.
Hey, Andy, isn't it time there should be a FAQ for LCDs covering the key topic which are brought up time and again on the forums......ie Response time, gaming, contrast ratio,dead pixels......
RESPONSE TIME could be better defined takes a LCD pixel from a powered down state to reach a powered up state and power down. ie, time it takes to to turn from BLACK ===>WHITE====>BLACK........Thats all it measures...........nothing more, nothing less..

Dangit people! 3fps won't mask ghosting, and response time doesn't = a magic fps threshold where you won't see ghosting anymore. I had this discussion in another thread. If the response time is low enough, your eyes won't perceive it, but that's different for everyone. That's why I recommend the Hitachi CML184, because its quick response times will usually mean little to no ghosting for most people. However, until they get down to ~10ms (or if NEC/Mitsubishi ever uses FFD), we'll never be able to say that a certain monitor has no ghosting.
If you don't see much ghosting, then kudos to you. I would worry more about brightness and contrast. Check if you can see the whitest whites and the blackest blacks.

Since the frame rate on most LCD's is 60Hz and 60Hz = 16.6MS why do we need faster than 16MS response time? BTW dont hold your breath waiting for FFD.

What i have noticed, more than blurring in games, is color fade or dropout. When moving and there is a bright color next to a dark color, the bright color just disappears until you stop moving (as the bright color is being transferred to an area of the screen that was previously dark).
LCD is different from CRT.
75Hz is useless, the display is not clear as 60Hz.
All LCD can do 60 or 75Hz for analog input, fixed at 60Hz for DVI.
Like Hitachi, they even recommend to run at lower rate.
You will also notice that, unlike CRTs, manufactuers of LCD monitors recommend using a lower refresh rate ; 60 or 70 Hz; The reason for lower refresh rates in LCDs is because the liquid crystal molecules damper flicker and higher refresh rates are not as important.
