Texas Weather

FML

I have to drive to Dallas in a few hours(i'm east of it now by a few hours). The weather is SHIT, I've been reading it's an ice city in DFW area.

fn weather. Tahoe is has a bad tire, so I'm driving my old Avalon:thumbsdown:

Any one in the area care to inform me how bad the roads are? I've never had to drive this long in weather like this. Any advice for icy roads? I'll definitely be taking it slow but crap, I really don't want to drive in this weather.

Fuck weddings.

AWD can be a nightmare in icy conditions, because if you start to slide, the rear wheels will just push you into a spin.

I won't mock you.

Leave early. If its a 3 hour drive on a normal day, leave an hour early.
Leave plenty of room between you and the car ahead of you. 1 car length per 10 miles an hour minimum.
Use your brakes sparingly. This ties into leaving plenty of room.
Stay in the same lane. Changing lanes is when you spin out.

On the Gulf Coast roads are clear of ice. Though, there are warnings of ice north of Huntsville.

Best of luck,
Uno

Be safe. There's at least an inch of ice on the roads. On the plus side, I can see water running underneath that sheet of ice just an hour ago, so it's melting. It'll probably freeze up again tonight though.

Iced in dfw, salt though. Some smaller roads do not have anything but ice. I know Mansfield is still iced, I have no idea how far it goes though. Water is under some ice though. About an inch of solid ice, frozen rain up to 2 inches here.

Drag a heavy chain behind your car. It will rip chucks of ice out of the road thus discouraging tail-gaters.

...not much change now actually

Dallas is too general. You need to say where at in Dallas.

Forget about the northern part of of the metro plex. Anything above 30 has been terrible all day and will be worse tonight/tomorrow am as everything refreezes. The sourthern part of the metroplex is marginally better but will refreeze and again be worse tonight/tomorrow am than it was lastnight/today.

The western part of the metroxplex got it the worst with 3-4" of ice. Most of the rest of the metro plex got 1-2".

Be aware some roads and exchanges are COMPELTELY shut down. 35 E and W in Denton county is shut down in large stretches(there is an 8 mile stretch of 35 that is a parking lot in Denton County that has stranded hundreds of drivers). Many exchanges around the Metroxplex such as the Fort Worth Mixmaster, the Dallas Mixmaster, and Dallas High 5 are shut down or have parts that are being regularly and randomly shut down to clean off stuck traffic.

Stay away from the exchanges, and stick to flat solid/non elevated roadways and you will be fine if you take it slow.

Power is still out for parts of the metroplex. Main roads/highways are fine as the ice is melted on the paths of the roads.

Less traveled roads are still pretty icy. It's going to get a lot colder tonight so more ice could form. Bridges are obviously not a good idea either, so I'd avoid those.

WOW this weekend was a nightmare. I have pics and stories that I'll post in a bit.

What a freaking disaster/ Fort Worth by far got the worst. I spent Friday night in Wylie/Garland area, wasns't too bad. GB turn pike was horrible(2.5 hours) to drive from Wylie to Fort Worth.

Definitely never doing that again.

Let me guess you went PGBT to I30 or I20. Both had problems all weekend(both were regularly shut down for hours), even throughout yesterday. The elevated surfaces are still causing serious problems today. I20 and I30 have alot of elevated surfaces, more so I30 towards Downtown Ft Worth.

All the DFW area school districts canceled again. While there are plenty of roads that are dry, elevated roadways and most all the side streets still have a lot of ice.

Never park under a building after an ice storm. There were a lot of totaled out cars yesterday around the metroplex because of ice sheets(5-6" thick) falling off tall buildings.

still the same

I feel for you guys. We got hammered with snow last night and my drive in only took 10 minutes longer than normal. Just checked traffic and the whole city is green.

Y'all need to buy some salt trucks 😛

Only took me about 10 minutes extra to get to work, of course 9 of those 10 were just trying to get out of the driveway. From the back of my tires to the end of the driveway was a sheet of ice and a slight incline to the road...

thats the best part of these kids of mornings!

Make sure the street is clear
Gun it in reverse
Crank the wheel as hard as possible at the end of the drive
See how many spinnies you can do!

Dallas is broke and will always be broke. There's very little cooperation between the plethora of independent cities that make up the metroplex, and all the rich folk tend to want to live in the suburbs surrounding Dallas.

The result is Dallas tends to have a very low income for its size.

Ahhh

The county handles it here. Roads are cleared based on volume of traffic, not income. Matter of fact when things are bad, they will leave side streets unplowed on purpose to keep speed and traffic down. But then you get on a main road and they are pretty clear.

But we deal with this for 4 or 5 months a year. We have the system down pretty well.

City of Dallas road services have been on top of things since the bad weather started. All major (and plenty of minor) roads were sanded and plowed\scraped. I'm in University Park and have been staying in most of the time, but the few times I've driven in the past few days have been fine.

Dallas proprer(inside loop 635) only got 1-2 inches of ice. Parts of fort worth specifically most of the western half of tarrant got around 4-5 inches. Salt doesn't so much when you are dealing with that much ice. They were trying to break it up and scrape it up with graders yesterday with the help of 35 graders brought in from San Antonio and Houston.

Keep in mind they were only forecasting .25-.5+ inches for this ice storm.
