Texas ups speed limit to 85mph!

They upped interstate in KS to 75 recently. Nice to get where you're going a little faster, but as mentioned cars tend to be a lot less fuel efficient at higher speeds. Per car it's a small difference but then you multiply that by millions of cars and trucks and it probably really starts to add up.

The only long distance driving i do in Texas is from Houston to Arlington. I could easily see 85 being fine along I45. Most of the cars are already doing 80-85 there.

Gas Mileage wise i'm ok with spending a few bucks more to get there quicker. I hate long drives.

I drive a Cavalier with a 3-speed auto. I think my car would explode if I held 85 for any length of time.

First off, if people wish to drive faster at the cost of gas efficiency that is their business. Second, not all cars are the same for efficiency at all speeds. My RX8 has SIGNIFICANT better gas mileage at around 75 over 65. It goes down again after that though. Depending on the RPM range and gear I am in over a given distance I can hit 14 mpg up to 22-23 mpg. Which for my car is a big difference.

ive noticed my gas mileage suffers when im cruising at 80 instead of 70.

Mine doesn't. 1996 Toyota Avalon, 3L V6, 4spd auto.

My car is fairly efficient in city driving – roughly 26mpg. Once I get on the highway though it starts CHUGGING gas... I haven't calculated the fuel economy but I'm frankly scared to. Why in the world did anyone think it would be a good idea to make a 3-speed auto?
