Big Oil must have the Texas legislature in their pockets. This move just decreases fuel efficiency and increases the demand for gas. *dawns tinfoil hat*

Damn, that's 137km/h. That's really fast for the average bonehead driver.

Is that the highest in the country now? There are a lot of places at 75 too, right?

While 85mph sounds great and all...that certainly is not enough to get me to move to Texas.

Note: I hate Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

im assuming this is on the rural stretches of I-10 in west texas.

Which is pointless. There's NOTHING in west I-10.

There aren't even cops. On my roadtrip, I floored my car and drove at 130mph the whole time.

In fact, after about 55 or so, fuel efficiency starts dropping EXTREMELY rapidly.

Your wind resistance just becomes too high.
IIRC, the relationship is cubic. Going 2x as fast increases your drag by 8x. This is why the Veyron needs over 1000HP to go 250mph.

Rule of thumb is that your gas mileage drops by 10% for every 10km/h over 100km/h (62.5mph). Your new speed is 136km/h (85mph), so your gas mileage is 0.9^3.6
= 0.684

If your car was getting 40mpg when driving 60, you'll only get about 27mpg when going 85.

That's only a 5 mile increase...

Here's the corresponding journal entry of my road trip. Sorry for the shitty grammar, it's more for documenting what I did:

Day 24 (Sunday 11/15/09)
I woke up at 8, ate their free breakfast then passed out again til 11:30am. Today I have nothing to do but drive. There is literally nothing between San Antonio and El Paso. Nothing but one stretch of I-10 and desert. The drive was absolutely breathtaking. It was what I had been waiting for all along since I was traveling east coast. The speed limit is 80, the road is mostly straight and cars are very seldom.
I left around noon. I drove drove and drove. It was so relaxing and therapeutic. Many times I kept opening the window to smell the very air and feel directly. I even pulled over couple times to snap some scenic pictures (near Sonora & Ozona). It's nothing but open desert. Absolutely nothing else. It was just like when I went to the Arizona Hopi missions trip back when I was in high school. That was nearly 10 years ago.
I passed through Fort Stockton and drove on. The beauty of the sunset was indescribable. By then, I had entered the mountainous region so I played hide and seek with the sun until it finally set. It was an experience like no other. I listened to 'Sky Moves Sideways (Alternate Version)' by Porcupine Tree, which is 35 mins long. The music orchestrated the sunset just perfectly. One mountain top I saw very very far away, dark gray in color due to distance. I played a mini game to myself to see how far it would be. I had guessed 20 miles. It ended up being 50 miles until I passed it. The plane of view here is just spectacular.
I also drive my car to its limit. 160 horsepower topped out at 120 miles. Good stuff.

There is no rule of thumb. It differs vastly from vehicle to vehicle.

What the hell is wrong with Texas?

I44 heading up into Oklahoma has been 80 and that road is a complete piece of crap. I usually go 70 on it because I'm afraid of bouncing off the road.

This is true. On I-10 east of San Antonio the speed limit is currently 70, but west of San Antonio is currently 80. That is likely where it will be upped to 85.

I wouldn't stay at that speed for the entire duration as I have seen a few cops on that stretch from time to time. But you get such long view distances at points that you can see when you are clear to push the speed for stretches.

My 4 cylinder Camry would go 110mph on cruise, though I usually kept it closer to 90 so I could slow down in time if I did see a cop.
