Texas State Senate special election

In a district that Hillary Clinton won by 12 points, Republican Flores won by 6 points.

"Voters elected political newcomer Pete Flores to the Texas Senate on Tuesday, flipping a Democratic district red for the first time in 139 years and bolstering Republicans’ supermajority in the chamber ahead of the November elections.

A retired game warden, Flores defeated former state and U.S. Rep. Pete Gallego for the Senate District 19 seat after receiving backing from some of the state’s most prominent politicians, including Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, and U.S. Sens John Cornyn and Ted Cruz."

Doesn't help when the Dem previously holding the seat just got convicted. Sorry Gallego, you did not catch the blue wave.

So to be clear you believe that special election results are big indicators of other races to come? 🙂

That's pretty fantastic news for Democrats.
Of course it is, a turnaround of 18 points and a big win by Republicans is always fantastic news for Democrats in your lying world.

Haha, add another lie to the pile for Taj! If you believe that special election results are harbingers of future election results you will be happy to learn that the average special election swing has been hugely in favor of the Democrats. By your own logic the special election results of the last 18 months ARE fantastic news for the Democrats!

The average special election swing across the country has been somewhere around 13 points in favor of the Democrats. If you think this special election is good news for Republicans in Texas, that means good news for Democrats almost everywhere. How fun for us!

I just found out about this one with your thread. It's the first one where the swing has been in this direction. I'm not sure what to make of it, although I do know it's of little consequence with another election 2 months ahead.

Not true, there have been a number of special elections since 2016 where the swing has been towards Republicans. The overwhelming majority have been towards Democrats but not all.

No worries. It was reading comprehension fail on my part. I didn't realize this was for Texas State Senate. I was thinking of Congressional special elections which have all swung blue since Trump took office. State is a different story but the trend clearly holds.

San Antonio native here, beating Pete Gallego is about as impressive as someone with both legs beating a field of one legged opponents in a foot race. Recent Democratic rep was convicted and removed from his seat, the natural reaction is to swing support to the other party. Things will be back to normal when the next normal election cycle rolls around.

Trudeau is sucking dirt along with his trade minister and looking like a fool.

Taj tries to derail his own thread & doubles down on it. Remarkable.

Winning a local special election in Texas probably won't extrapolate to victory at a national level in November. There's no reason to think it might. If it doesn't happen this year then it'll probably happen in 2020 after the electorate has even more time to get sick of GOP shit.

wow, so democrats don't support criminals? This must be a strange behavior for republicans to observe out in the wild like this! One wonders if they will consider this a teaching moment.

lol, OK, no, of course they won't. Go prime some fresh grenades, OP.
